Five Factors That May Contribute To Why Action Scenes Have Been Less Badass From Carranger Up To Present

Image
It may be a good idea to take a look at the 40 years of Super Sentai with how they did with action scenes. While Zyuohger like a huge chunk of Super Sentai from Carranger up to present have action scenes but they aren't like the ones I love from old school Super Sentai. I want to make this speculation to what led to a reduction of the quality of action scenes. I have to remember I'm not watching Wuxia films and series but Super Sentai while I'm writing this post.

Possible Cultural Differences in Super Sentai and Power Rangers

Image
I did remember the article from Orends Range about why Power Rangers is not a rip-off , UkiyaSeed did mention that American and Japanese culture is widely different.  So localization is needed by Toei via Saban then Disney then Saban and Nickelodeon to get it done.  Now for some cultural differences aside from the obvious kimono in Japan: Degrees of violence. While Super Sentai has reduced violence to a considerable extent post-Timeranger but you can't deny that there is still more daring action.  An example is in Boukenger when Sakura and Natsuki both used machine guns.  But you don't see that in Operation Overdrive with Rose and Ronnie, who I think could actually still pull that kind of scene of but Disney most likely won't allow it.  Other comparisons might be Naoto's death vs. Eric's supposed death (which was probably scrapped off at the last minute).  One may also see Mikoto's death in Abaranger and the use of bullets in Dekaranger.  In Shinken...

Lighter Super Sentai Seasons, Darker Super Sentai Seasons and Power Rangers Fans

Image
I guess for some Power Rangers fans who are checking out certain seasons of Super Sentai whether it'd be pre-Zyuranger or post-Zyuranger, I guess there's the distinction between lighter seasons.  Now I'd like to share this post in response to Mr. Smith's similar entry .  I won't tackle every series as I am yet to see a lot of them completely like Abaranger and Gingaman (I only saw even less than a quarter of it).  Now moving on... For starters, let's compare Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.  I can't do much of an entire analysis of every season, honest I'm no Super Sentai wiz and I haven't seen all the series neither do I think I have all the time in the world.  Back to the topic, we will think about the two.  You could actually start with the Bandora vs. Rita Repulsa side- Bandora herself might have a comical side but her plans in Zyuranger are usually scarier.  Rita Repulsa only sought to make Kimberly avoid meeting...

Perhaps Super Sentai's Greatest Lesson: NEVER Imitate What You See on TV

Image
Hmmm in Super Sentai, there are actually REAL consequences that happen. For example we have: In Bioman episodes 35-36, Yatori tries to imitate the moves of the Biomen to his own disadvantage. In Maskman episode 38, we see a younger Takeru trying to imitate a henshin and nearly broke his bones. Also wounds and scars are more visible than they are in Power Rangers. In Super Sentai, fights usually show the consequences, to the point of bleeding and... Not to mention injury caused in battle and accidents. Some Sentai rangers go as far as to even get broken bones (ex. Kasumi in Fiveman broke her arm), to being heavily bandaged (like Satoru Akashi above and Eiji Takaoka) to even... Deaths of the good guys. Naoto Takizawa's death at the hands of a zenitto while out of suit proves even lowly scuds can kill the best cops. Children are shown why they shouldn't be playing with deadly weapons.

Violent Scenes in Super Sentai

Image
Super Sentai is known for being more violent than Power Rangers. Now I'd like to put some in picture form to what makes Super Sentai more realistic than Power Rangers despite the weirdness in it . These pictures I hope will convince you NOT to imitate what you see on TV and that violence isn't fun! Some things to note: There's much damage when there's an attack and an emergency situation is NO joke. Some enemies come in a deceitful manner as portrayed in most of the series. Playing with dangerous weapons can hurt you. Justice and revenge are different. The super sentai team fight to protect people putting vendettas behind, revenge is all about self. Here are the types of violence common in Super Sentai usually NOT seen in Power Rangers: Knives were a common dangerous weapon in Super Sentai. The use of guns have become common in Super Sentai. Stabbing is another common violent act in Super Sentai. Most fight scenes in Super Sentai are more intense than P...

Sentai and Crucifixion

Image
Super Sentai also got notorious for using crucifixion as well. Crucifixion is a method of punishment for the worst criminals in the ancient world. Although Japan is hardly into Western influence, still east meets west. What's interesting is that in Japanese history, there was the execution by haritsuke which a victim was bound to the cross prior to being finished. In Super Sentai, there were failed haritsukes that occured. Here are some of them: JAKQ had this crucifixion scene where Jack, Ace, King and Queen were supposed to be executed but a fake missile saved them. In Bioman episode 28, Dr. Man designed these crosses to be their gravesites which would slowly kill them in agony which was a course of action to punish the Big Three for treason. In Maskman episode "Prince Igam's A Woman", it was during this episode when Akira became Fencer Unas and Igam had them set on crosses, symbolizing death before Igam's true person was revealed before many. The Je...
