Sentai Swords

Image
If there's been any cliche weapon in Super Sentai it's the sword. Most super sentai shows always had swords just as in the past, Kamen Riders used rider kicks. I'll only feature the significant swords. I believe swords are used frequently because of their significance to Japanese culture as well as in battle. The Super Sentai genre first only had swords for the robot. Battle Fever J only had a sword for Battle France (trademarked) and the robot Battle Fever Robo used a samurai. Every primary robot used a sword to defeat the enemy. Denziman characters used NO sword. The Goggle V team were the first to use swords but they were rather short ones. Dynaman had the red ranger wield a different type of sword. The red ranger uses the default sword as well as his own special sword. Other red rangers who did were Red Mask, Live Falcon, Red Turbo, Five Red, Ryu Ranger, Oh Red and Red Racer. The Biomen started having long swords. However they started in gun mode and they also ...

Super Sentai Drama

Image
Super Sentai is seemingly kept alive by intense drama. For better or for worse... super sentai has its dramatic moments... even for comedy series like Go-onger and Carranger. These are some of the types of drama that entered into super sentai: There's sentai rivalry between members. Maskman had it with Black Mask and Red Mask. However the most popular before was that of Red Hawk and Black Condor. The element kind of stirred things up for the better especially for Dekaranger in the persons of Deka Red and Deka Blue and Bouken Red and Bouken Black in Boukenger. Our heroes do have weaknesses too which they must overcome... my favorite picture of this would be the past of Bouken Black in Boukenger which haunts him even more than it does with Black Condor in Jetman. Besides even Gao Silver once foolishly wore the wolf mask of Loki and became a vessel for evil but his true goodness conquered it. There are some sentai series that feature a weird love story and Maskman was the...

Super Sentai Soundtrack

Image
Actually I think Sentai soundtrack is really something that keeps Super Sentai going. How is it done? Well here's how I think it is being kept fresh for old and new fans alike. For example, keeping the pace with the era. However it's not always the case because some newer sentai soundtrack may remind some fans of older sentai soundtrack to a certain extent- but both are great according to their own respect. The fact is sentai soundtrack tries to incorporate a different song or instrumental for a different scenario delivering the specific feeling be it love, hate, jealousy, fear, excitement... you got it. The lyrics do count aside from just tunes. Why? Good lyrics develop a good song. Without the right words, the whole series won't get the attention of audiences. Whether J-Pop or even J-Rock, each one tries to deliver a certain flavor to keep it fresh even if the next one isn't as good as the last.

Super Sentai Humor

Image
Actually I think one of the things that kept 2000s sentai going is trying to carry over traditional Japanese humor (some can be crude). Besides WTF moments (I'd like to change the meaning to what's that funny) make every Super Sentai series classic. Here are some typical humor elements that happen and keep sentai going: You'll hit the wrong side of the fence. Many gags do happen to the red ranger. The most infamous has to be Red Hawk falling into the girls' area and he gets framed while Black Condor and Yellow Owl giggle about it. You've got a lot of idiotic villains with the brain of a starfish that can't understand simple instructions. While they annoyed their superiors, they entertained the audience. Nobody can forget them getting punished by their superiors a couple of times. Bukback from Zyuranger was probably the dumbest villain in sentai history- at least Zulten from Turboranger could aim properly! Some villains do have a funny side and my favorite ...

Eiji Takaoka: Blown by the Silver Wind

Image
I think he's one of the most interesting rangers in Sentai History for the reason that he's actually a wandering violent demon like Yamimaru and Kirika . His backstory is kind of interesting so let's get it down. His father (acted by Hirose Watari a.k.a. Sharivan and later Spielban) was a member of the Takaoka clan, probably that allied itself with Rakia centuries ago and fought with several violent demon tribes. However not all of them were sealed away for long. His father fell in love with his mother a violent demon and thus he was born a nagare bouma. Like Kirika's parents, it was really love but one that was never allowed. He had no idea who his mother was until the two Ashu enforcers Gai and Rei appeared who sought to release all the violent demons (which may include Ragorn and maybe even Ramu and Gorg from Jetman) from Hell back to Earth. He realized he was half-violent demon and he grew to resent his heritage, pledging himself a full blooded human. For a ti...

A Blue Coincidence?

Image
Actually I think that there's much of a coincidence between Youhei Hama (Blue Turbo) and Souta Megumi (Bouken Blue) in these ways: I think they almost look alike. Both are jocular and chases around girls. Both of them also had fallen in love with the enemy but in different ways. Blue Turbo fell for Chime Violent Demon and lost her when Jarmin killed her. Souta Megumi develops a crush on Shizuka. Both tend to goof off from duty at times. Both are good friends but not romantically involved with the pink rangers of their respective series. They sometimes beat a monster together. Both tease their female partner with the leader of the group whenever the pink ranger gets close to the red ranger.

Ryu Tendo and Guy Yuki: An Analysis

Image
Actually in Jetman, nothing is more complex at the start than the relationship between Ryu Tendo and Guy Yuki who don't like each other at the first time they meet. There was much of a difference between them. So let's face it- Ryu Tendo was serious about saving Earth and Guy Yuki wasn't. Guy Yuki was one hesitant to join the team until he realizes that all is in danger. Despite him joining the team, he and Ryu Tendo hardly got along for so many reasons. One had to be the way Ryu Tendo would harshly deal with subordinates sometimes and Guy Yuki is one to give him a sarcastic snigger. The first time that happened was when Ryu Tendo pushes Kaori Rokumen too hard (a reference to the Gatchaman scene of Ken getting mad at Jun and Joe doing likewise). Another is when Kaori Rokumen slowly grows feelings for Ryu Tendo the same time Guy Yuki does for her. It goes get more complex as it goes along because Kaori Rokumen is ignored by Ryu Tendo while Guy Yuki likes her. So I just...
