That Good Old Super Sentai SLAP

Image
This week's Donbrothers really has me thinking about Donbrothers!Haruka's SLAP. Yes, that good old slap. The slap was a scene this week when Dragoku became blinded by rage. I find it crazy how Donbrothers!Haruka could slap someone in THAT'S NOT SPANDEX . Isn't there some protective field around that power suit or what? These suits are most likely made of special metal so I was expecting Donbrothers!Haruka to injure her hand. Nope, she got away just fine which for me is just weird. Then again how many times have we seen out-of-suit Super Sentai battles where humans punch robots? Goggle V ,  Bioman and Ohranger really need some explanation on their out-of-suit battles with mechanical footsoldiers. They look good but it's illogical. Donbrothers!Haruka did slap Tsubasa out of impulse in episode 11. I guess that supposedly adds layers to her character... OR NOT. The whole scene made me think of the times when slaps get inserted into Super Sentai on occasion. I'm jus...

When Ordinary People Do Extraordinary Things As Sentai Rangers

Image
I was watching Avatar Sentai Donbrothers and got into this statement. The very words of Taro himself (and granted, this is penned by none other than TOSHIKI INOUE) may make people remember Chojin Sentai Jetman - the very series that overshadowed its successor Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger as it saved Super Sentai franchise from cancellation. Maybe, one reason why Zyuranger wasn't as popular was that the heroes were extraordinary characters, raised as ancient warriors, in contrast to what a lot of Super Sentai series do. It's all about how, at times, ordinary people end up doing extraordinary things. I think the series can highlight a bit how Haruka Kito, like Zoey Reeves in Power Rangers Beast Moprhers , are menial workers who wear yellow spandex . Most of the Donbrothers are ordinary people such as Tyuyoshi who's an office worker whose wife probably doesn't know he's a ranger, Tsubasa is a guy who's wrongly framed, and Shinichi is a detective. Nothing seems to stand ...

Trying To Get The Hang Of Donbrothers' Lore And The Sixth Ranger Introduction

Image
I decided that because I'm watching Donbrothers and Kamen Rider Revice at IRREGULAR intervals - I've simply quit writing episode reviews! So there! It doesn't mean I wouldn't be reacting to updates. Also, I'll admit that in my challenge to watch as many Super Sentai series as possible - I believe I've just hit the boredom zone trying to watch more of Goranger and JAKQ . I felt like I hit the boredom zone sometime after Go-Busters . I've watched almost all the old-school series  I feel some older series just ain't for me . Not to mention, there's so much cool stuff on Netflix and other media that Super Sentai just gets lower on my leisure list. In fact, there's a higher risk of it getting out. However, I find myself interested in Donbrothers even if Zenkaiger really DRAINED ME HARD. Is it me or are anniversaries by Junko Komura not as good as her non-anniversary seasons ? Trying to understand this show's Kaito and the role of the Kibi Points ...

Super Sentai VS. Movies Compared To The Dragon Ball Z Movies

Image
As I was doing some nostalgic revisits -- I found this article on Dragon Ball Z's movie series which is obviously non-canon . I used to watch the limited amounts of Super Sentai offered (which Toei Ltd. probably also gets the blame for making the royalties too high), Power Rangers (which I just can't like), and a couple of animated series with Toei Animation involved. Hasbro (before getting Power Rangers ) also had help from Toei Ltd. with the 1980s cartoons G.I. Joe and The Transformers . Toei Ltd. would later make their own spin-off series based on Hasbro's property. Just think of the Bandai merchandise with Toei Ltd. involved as "one happy family". Even if I dislike Power Rangers , I still think some Super Sentai seasons are bad, and I can have on this and that. This makes me think about my childhood and growing up years. Remembering the Dragon Ball Z movies There were a couple of Dragon Ball Z movies shown in the Philippines. Some of them were even merged ...

The Super Sentai Crossover Hype

Image
I never thought I'd put this into writing but I want to write about the Super Sentai crossover hype. If you try to do some reviews you might notice that the crossover hype wasn't done overnight. There were some stage shows then later TV performances. I want to write about the Super Sentai crossover hype which was shelved for a long time but came back during the late 90s and has been continuing until this present year of 2017. Now, I decided to update this post in regards to Donbrothers really refusing to become more "self-contained" like Go-Busters did.  The ongoing yearly Super Sentai vs. Super Sentai VS Movies It started with JAKQ vs. Goranger which were the only two series made by Shotaro Ishinomori. The two movies were somewhat connected to each other. But what's known is that Super Sentai series didn't have any TV crossover after JAKQ ended. Battle Fever J came two years later after JAKQ . JAKQ ended early in 1977 due to slow ratings and Battle Feve...

Finally, Donbrothers' First Combined Megazord And My Thoughts On The Rather Long Intro Arc

Image
I wanted to go on a hiatus (or even eventually stop blogging about Super Sentai altogether). Now, it's time to look at what I might call a new type of mecha combination. It's really not enough that the other rangers become CGI-deformed people.  This is really one weird way to do the mecha... Previously, we saw the Donbrothers become CGI-deformed characters. Some even defy their sizes like how in the world did one's spandex (insert Dr. K's jokes here) get LONGER LEGS or how can one become a midget dog or a bulky gorilla? What I find even more logic-defying is how in the world do they become mecha versions of themselves? Instead of piloting the mecha - they BECOME the Mecha. Don Momotaro has also copied the technique to fight in another dimension like the Space Sheriff Trilogy heroes Gavan, Sharivan , and Shaider . I think Toei Ltd. discontinuing the Metal Hero franchise is all because of Kamen Rider's revival. Metal Hero may be discontinued (probably because Rob...

Did Super Sentai Try To Create A "Morphing Grid" For Certain Super Sentai Seasons?

Image
I was watching Donbrothers and it's been hard not to think about Beast Morphers . Call me weird all you want but it happened. I wonder why is Donbrothers even using the ability to become past Super Sentai... pretty much like  Gokaiger ? At one moment where I'm praising Go-Busters for trying to make Enetron independent of all other sources - I'm now wondering if I'm badmouthing Donbrothers for linking itself to Zenkaiger so directly? As if having both Zoey and Haruka showing their jobs as noble heroism wasn't enough. I did write an article about why a Super Sentai Morphin' Grid is just impossible . However, what if the concept was integrated into the VS. Movies and the anniversary seasons (as well as some selected seasons) without us knowing it? Take note that Power Rangers doesn't mention the Morphin' Grid all the time too.  Maybe, the idea was actually made for the Gokaiger continuity though not existent in the default series' timeline Gokaiger is o...
