Donbrothers' Fondness For Food "Porn"?

Sure, you probably had seen Kamen Rider Kabuto which was that Kamen Rider season that made you go hungry. Well, I could also remember the "Food Fight" episode in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers back in the 1990s. This week's Avatar Sentai Donbrothers episode showed Toshiki Inoue's rather weird sense of humor. Meanwhile, we have Tyuyoshi going crazy and calling a doll Miho-chan and it looks like Miho returned home. Again, I'm not doing episode reviews these days, okay?

The episode really made me want to eat out again. We know how the pandemic sucks right? Can't eat in a diner last 2020. Now, there's limited dine-in yet there's still the risk of catching Omicron even if you're vaccinated with the Legacy Virus booster. Oh yeah, Kohaku Shida did get the mild variant of the Legacy Virus. The episode had a food critic who couldn't get satisfied until some kind of strange egg was served. Though, this wasn't the only episode that Donbrothers where we have what can be called as food "porn". Before you think of anything dirty - no this is NOT about dirty acts and once again it's Super SENTAI and not Super HENTAI.

Watching Donbrothers at an irregular pace makes it easy to hit or miss. Early on, we have that Rabbit plagiarist who even copies Haruka's recipes such as her beef stroganoff. Later, we had a lot of varieties of food served. The beef stroganoff wasn't so highlighted and I wish it were. There was the episode where they were eating nagashi somen (episode 31). Episode 25 also featured restoring a restaurant to its former glory. Episode 28 even featured some delicious desserts at Cafe Donbura. That episode really might trigger my worst hyperactivity attacks. That's just a few of those food "porn" moments that the series has done.

Am I surprised at the food "porn"? Well, now that I mentioned it, I'm not too surprised since it's a very common element in many shows. I've watched some KDrama recently and I'm not surprised at how food "porn" is really there. In the case of Inoue, one needs to think about the food "porn" done in some series where Inoue is the head writer. Kamen Rider Agito has yakinuku. Kamen Rider Kiva had many food scenes. Heck, I couldn't forget Nago and Megumi eating together foreshadowing their marriage! Inoue did write the cooking battle episode in Kamen Rider Blade. Inoue seems to be among the writers who know how to make you go hungry. I just wonder how he'd handle Samurai Sentai Shinkenger episodes though if he was ever assigned. It seems Inoue is among the many writers who likes to do what's called food "porn". Well, Inoue was also a secondary writer for Kamen Rider Kabuto so I guess he wanted to do some food trips in Donbrothers.

Some extra history before we close

The original Super Sentai series, Himitsu Sentai Goranger, has the Snack Shop Gon in the 1970s. However, that snack shop has been a facade for government activities to combat the Black Cross Army. A lot of details of the Gorangers are secret. I guess before Kosoku Sentai Turboranger codified the trope - the Gorangers were already told to NEVER let anyone (except certain people) know their secret identities. I found the idea of a snack shop hiding a military base to be copied from American superhero shows. It was also the first series to feature Japanese curry though it's known I prefer Mideast or Indian curry instead.

Super Sentai does get into a lot of food items too. I think about Denji Sentai Megaranger if I'm going to eat yakiniku. I ended up craving yakiniku while watching Megaranger hence I got fat (and my brain function got hindered as a result) from overeating it. There was also a baking episode in Ressha Sentai ToQGer. Maybe, I could also name that there are really some that deliberately make you see a cooking scene.

Kaito Sentai Lupinranger vs. Keisatsu Sentai Patranger had its 23rd episode making me hungry. I even craved French food. I really felt hungry watching that episode. It makes you hungry even when you see the food preparation. I guess the people in Toei Ltd. have been learning different methods of presenting delicious food in their shows. It's not the first time and it's been done for decades. I'm amazed at how Donbrothers might be trying to improvise food placements.

  1. There's a rumour that Toei is looking to buy Hasbro/eOne.
