Is A Super Sentai Year-End Recap/Clip Show All That Necessary?
There's no Super Hero Time this week. There are times I felt like a Year-End special may be necessary. Take note that it's not all the time that it happens. I wrote a compilation of Super Sentai year-end specials back on December 31, 2019. They weren't regular episodes but some kind of strange clip show. There's been Super Sentai clip shows such as an Avatar Sentai Donbrothers episode when Kamen Rider Revice ended. I felt like looking back and wondering if Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger deserves a recap or not.
There were times a clip show gave the audience a review class of sorts. The last we had it was in Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. Denji Sentai Megaranger just had a strange episode where Kenta Date accidentally lost his Digitizer. Seijuu Sentai Gingaman gave a review class where the heroes recalled their adventures. Last year was the 25th anniversary of Gingaman. Why in the world didn't Toei decide to prepare a clip show for the year-end? It would've been fun if the Ohsama Sentai would review their adventures - up to the point where Racules went from being Captain Ryuuya from Mirai Sentai Timeranger to becoming Captain Alex from Power Rangers Time Force. Yeah, you know how Super Sentai got toned down. Maybe, Shout! Factory DVD sales may skyrocket now since they're focused on the Lighter and Softer entries of the franchise.
Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive did happen in 1999 and rumors that the world will end in 2000 happened. The clip show featured the possibility that systems data will get hit by the Y2K. Eventually, the finale of GoGoFive felt very apocalyptic. Grandienne turned out that she's Evil Energy personified. I think the Saima Clan were pretty much For the Evulz. The clip show was kind of entertaining. It reminded me of the Y2K scare and I was using an old CPU back then!
Mirai Sentai Timeranger was most likely meant as a finale-type series. Super Sentai felt it had a reboot more than once. The clip show had everyone recall their adventures and Naoto Takizawa's requests for cleaning the V-Rex. It would be interesting that Timeranger would eventually give everyone a Ranger History Lesson as Hyajakuu Sentai Gaoranger was about to air. Well, I'm still surprised that Timeranger DVDs still manage to sell. Some people complain about how overly serious the series got. It was also because the world was about to enter the 31st Century the following year.
I think the other year-end clips like Ressha Sentai ToQGer and Shuriken Sentai Ninninger may not be too necessary. However, I do feel that King-Ohger could've benefited from it because it feels like some massive anniversary season. Heck, think about how Geoffrey the Giraffe was invited to Ishabana. Toys R Us did play a role in the success of Toei and Saban when Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers came out in 2023. Sure, I dislike Power Rangers but I still think about the massive money it created for both Toei and Saban. So massive that Toei agreed to Saban's proposal to create footage for American use.
For me, it just depends on whether or not the device fits in. Most Super Sentai series didn't do a year-end clip show for most of its run. The first of the year episodes are meant to go for the finale. Some of them even happen during a transition period. Chojuu Sentai Liveman soon wrapped up its broadcast during the early Heisei era. Now, we're in the Reiwa era in Japan. I guess it's all up to the people at Toei Ltd.
