Confession: Why I Don't Regret Pausing On Newer Super Sentai, To Watch Older Super Sentai (That I Haven't Watched Yet)

Image
Today is Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers' 32nd anniversary. This year is also when Himitsu Sentai Goranger turned 50 years old last April 2025. Feeling old? I had a rollercoaster of emotions after Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger ended. Gokaiger felt like a yearlong finale. This year's Gozyuger feels like a yearlong finale. Gokaiger, more so ,  since it managed to get as many alumni to guest star as possible. It was almost a farewell party. However, Super Sentai tends to have that "reboot treatment" , such as when Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters came after Gokaiger . I was too afraid to admit that I was a Go-Busters fan . I ended up rewatching Go-Busters after I finished Power Rangers Beast Morphers . It was also hard for me to watch more Super Sentai after Go-Busters . It doesn't help I was riding on fan opinions. For instance, I remember Shougo B'Stard actually hitting Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger . I felt like, "Okay, maybe I need to spare myself from the disappointmen...

Super Sentai Series That Gave Me The "Hype Hangover"

Image
Himitsu Sentai Goranger is in its 50th year. However, I'll say that there have been some Super Sentai series that gave me the "hype hangover". These are times my actions seem like I'm "against innovation" when I'm NOT. What I'm against is when any production tries theme repetition (which is akin to reliance on past successes). I'd like to talk about Super Sentai series that would give me the "hangover hype". Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger may be the best dinosaur-themed Super Sentai IMHO It was in the 2010s when I saw Abaranger . Yes, all the way before this was given the official Shout! Factory DVD release. Kishinryu Sentai Ryusoulger has wonky execution and should've been dragons -- BASED ON THE TITLE! Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger has a lot of cool unmorphed fights. However, Daigo Kiryu gets too much focus. Abaranger  has a better balance of characters! This is also the first Super Sentai written by Naruhisa Arakawa . Arakawa's first hea...

Crazy Rant: K-Drama VS. Super Sentai/Power Rangers In The World Market

Image
It's known that I'm just a casual fan of just anything. If I ended up disliking something -- it's purely out of PREFERENCE. I'm writing this post as I prepare for another era of my life. I remembered that Shuriken Sentai Ninninger (yeah, screw that) had one episode where Shin Won Ho guest-starred as Silver. Won Ho (who starred in Legend of the Blue Sea alongside Shin Hye Sun aka Korean Ako-Chan) also spoke Japanese . So yes, Won Ho wasn't dubbed over in Ninninger . This reminds me when I feel "the need to move on" to something new. I got critical of Super Sentai's new direction   since the 2000s. The multiple combination modes of Megazords can get me lost. Himitsu Sentai Gaoranger started the multiple combination Zords gimmick with the Power Animals. I found it "bloated" until I first saw Power Rangers Wild Force in Cartoon Network. At the same time, Korean drama got more recognized worldwide in the 2000s. Is K-Drama the reason not so many ne...

I'm Pretty OK With Using Power Rangers Terminologies While Discussing Super Sentai

Image
Super Sentai has made certain American pop culture references. Heck, even Metal Hero and Kamen Rider have had them. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Tokosou Robo Janperson came AFTER Robocop or how Knight Rider inspired Tokkei Winspector and Kamen Rider Drive . Tokosou Sentai Dekaranger may have made several references to American movies such as Armageddon , Rocky Balboa , Speed , Die Hard , and Men in Black . It's not too surprising whenever Super Sentai and Power Rangers may have made nods to each other . Dragon Ball Z blatantly has American references such as the Days of Future Past storyline with Future Trunks or Frieza's third form with Aliens . Without much ado -- I want to present every terminology done in Power Rangers first that I'm A-OK will be used in conversations. Using the term "ranger" over "warrior"  The suffix "-man" has been dropped and the last to use it was Seijuu Sentai Gingaman . After that, the suffixes wer...

That 70s Super Sentai (Some Spoilers)

Image
That 70s Show, ALRIGHT!  I'm really feeling old as I feel the effects of the Space-Time Alpha Sword on me . I still find it weird that I had a love interest who looks like Mika Katsumura -- she's married to someone else now. It wasn't meant to be. I tried watching Battle Fever J then I took the challenge of watching Himitsu Sentai Goranger and Dengekitai JAKQ . Some people called me a baby back then for watching  Power Rangers in the 1990s -- that was all before I dropped the franchise out of PERSONAL REASONS . Officially, I've finally watched the whole 1970s era of Super Sentai . This was what might be the "simpler era" or figuring things out era. My late 30s self has an easier time watching older Super Sentai than newer ones -- even when I can still enjoy newer ones. But as said, it's not about older fans and rose-tinted glasses but on mostly younger fans! It can't be denied that before Super Sentai -- there was Tatsunuko's Science Ninja Team Gat...

First Impressions And My Own Expectations From Boonboomger's Lightspeed Delivery Services

Image
I wrote what I'd dub an even lower-than-amateurish review of  Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger's first episode . Writing episode reviews can be enjoyable but also exhausting. I enjoyed doing my whacked-out Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger reviews that can create a drinking game. That whole season was so unique on its own that it's hard for me to drop it. Right now, I feel I'll drop doing episode reviews while I can choose to react to updates. Recently, digital platforms have given me a lot of stuff to "move on to". I'm watching the J-Drama series Vivant . I was overhyped with Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger and I feel the need to slow things down. Talk about slowing things down while Boonboomger is trying to LITERALIZE Lightspeed and Bakuage means "Explosive Increase" or "Blast Off".  I think I'll just do reactions on Boonboomger the same way I did with Avatar Sentai Donbrothers . I think watching Boonboomger on a flexible schedule can help me regain my...

Wacky Post: I'm Enjoying King-Ohger While Feeling Awkward Over The "Western Feel"

Image
I guess it's time for me to make another confession now, isn't it? Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger may be a Japanese show but notice how Toufu (which is really based on Asian culture) is sidelined. I wonder if N'Kosopa is actually supposed to represent another Asian country or not. The other nations such as Shugoddom, Ishabana, and Gokkan are really representations of Western countries. There's a budget really which would explain why CGI is used. There are going to be different locations here and there - unlike Knights of Tir Na Nog which did all the filming in Ireland. The show's got a big budget like it's an anniversary season  after all. The  Super Sentai franchise   usually invokes the Tokyo is the Center of the Universe trope . Yes, that is rather absurd superhero logic in many superhero shows. In American shows, America is the center of the Universe presumably to avoid spending too much.  King-Ohger took a much braver direction by actually letting the whole ser...
