Dynaman As A Truly Explosive Improvement For Super Sentai In The 1980s (Spoilers)

Image
Hirohisa Soda is often hailed as Hail to the King or the best innovator ever. I've already seen all of the Soda era series to finally judge things . I really had no idea that the head writer of Dai Sentai Goggle V up to Chikyu Sentai Fiveman was all but one person until many years later. Yeah, that's how clueless I was until the Internet. I watched all the series in a rather jumbled order and that's okay. Super Sentai doesn't operate with too many throwbacks. Some people could start with something bad and then end up doing better. In the case of Soda, I think Goggle V was pretty much So Okay It's Average. Goggle V for me was fun but it can be overly cheesy, there are times the rangers feel too OP (especially with group gymnastic techniques), and the Deathdark villains aren't terrible but not amazing either. Before that, the 1980s started to kick off with other So Okay It's Average shows. I watched both Denzi Sentai Denziman and Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan . Mayb...

Dynaman Brings Forth The Power Of Spandex

Image
Kagaku Sentai Dynaman hits its 40th anniversary this year, right? It was in 1983 when Dynaman made a hit. Blink and you may miss one feature - it was the first Super Sentai entry that used spandex for the clothing design. Previous seasons used cotton-based suits. For some reason, Toei used cloth since 1975. Heck, that suit used for Japanese Spider-Man was obviously made of cotton. It wasn't until 1983 when Super Sentai started to use that one element - yes it's spandex but remember that it's NOT spandex in-script ! The invention of spandex is older than Super Sentai . In fact, it was invented by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont. Eventually, spandex was used for sports. I was wondering if the supply-demand gap for spandex was still low in Japan until 1982. From Himitsu Sentai Goranger up to Dai Sentai Goggle V - we can easily see how the usage of cotton fabric was the thing. However, Dynaman decided to go with spandex and I think it's because Toei was able to either get ...

Dynaman Episode 33 Had An Unknown Virus Leakage

Image
Bizarre coincidences or not? I remembered writing a post where I compared the COVID-19 to the Legacy Virus in X-Men . Screenrant also has a post where it compares the COVID-19 to the Legacy Virus . Then I decided to do some random viewing and didn't realize that Dynaman somewhat predicted the rise of the deadly pandemic. The episode features Prince Megiddo stupidly releasing Mammoth Evolution into the population. Well, what do you expect from villains who are pretty much For The Evulz, right? In Megiddo's case - he wants to use the monster to destroy the Dynamen and do a noble deed. Not that his father is so "great' either. It may be Emperor Aton's fault for having such a stupid son who'd eventually return to get rid of him. The plot also had the Mammoth Evolution beast break into a virology laboratory in Japan. I dunno did that part of Japan have Japanese eat wild meat or what? The unknown virus latches itself into Mammoth Evolution and the virus ...

I Just Finished Watching Michael Bay Errrr Kagaku Sentai Dynaman

Image
Well, it looks like Metallic Fansubs just handed nostalgic fans a good Christmas present. It's a secret project so I had to download it in a batch. I did watch the fansubs by Millionfold Curiosity but they did go on hiatus presumably due to real-life events. It's time to throw some Michael Bay jokes as I finally give my final thoughts on the series. I would dare say the show is a step up from the rather generic Goggle V and somewhat of a step-up for the great Hirohisa Soda himself. If you haven't watched the show then watch it before you read it - unless you're a spoiler addict like me! The second half gives us more dynamite than the first. The heroes did devote themselves into developing the newer, stronger version of the Dynamite Attack after Evilution Empire decided to create better monsters. However, newer villains spring up as the show must present some new fresh blood, right? The second half starts to develop some conflict. I always found Mari Kouno's r...

My Forced Comparison Of Kagaku Sentai Dynaman With Michael Bay

Image
Michael Bay would probably love Dynaman. There are some things that Dynaman and Bay's films would have in common. Here's my forced comparison just for the fun of doing it. The overuse of explosions Dynaman's overuse of explosions is really something for an 80s Super Sentai. It almost felt like that Bay directed it. I think it's only fitting for the show to have an overuse of explosions because of the "dyna". It's a dynamite-filled Super Sentai series. The tendency to use fanservice and attractive females Okay short shorts and short skirts aren't really new to Super Sentai. You already had that in Goranger. But it seems Dynaman has some fanservice with not just Rei Tachibana but also with Princess Chimera. Episode 20 featured a bikini battle between Rei and Chimera. Episode 29 features a sexy scene with Chimera bathing and her armor getting stolen. Should I mention Zenobia is also pretty attractive? For the love of awkward designs If Bay ...

My Thoughts On Dynaman In 36 Episodes

Image
It's been some time since I haven't really done any update on Michael Bay Kagaku Sentai Dynaman. Millionfold Curiosity has released Dynaman episodes 20-36. I thought I'd do an update post on Dynaman after I saw 20 episodes but instead, it ends up with me writing on an update after I saw 36 episodes. Just a reminder: I won't be doing old school episode reviews since I'll be doing a marathon in sharp contrast to the weekly episode reviews based on Super Sentai's episode of the week. So just be ready for random Dynaman related posts instead of episode reviews. What do I think of Dynaman after 36 episodes? I still can't help but joke that it's Michael Bay's production even if it isn't. The reason would be the huge explosions and maybe the clunky looking mecha. I could talk about a couple of stuff that I really find enjoyable about this series. While I didn't really find Battle Fever J and Sun Vulcan to be all that entertaining but I think Hir...

My Early Thoughts On Dynaman For The First Nine Episodes

Image
It's time for DYNAMAN! Oops wrong tagline! That was long ago when I enjoyed viewing the Dynaman Parody Dub. What's a pleasant surprise was that while Millionfold Curiosity is subbing Gavan (and they've got 24 episodes available, woohoo!) is that they've released Dynaman's first nine episodes . Well it's time to say goodbye Dynaman Parody Dub and in for the real deal. What are my thoughts on Dynaman with the first nine episodes? The show itself has some of the characteristics of some older Super Sentai series like it's really got the over-the-top action from the main cast and stuntmen, weird sense of humor and a lot of stuff you might not see in most of later Super Sentai and Power Rangers. A lot of the members here do stunts that really require a lot more training than most Super Sentai/Power Rangers cast members today. I guess that's why it's called Dynaman as in Dynamite or Dynamic. Besides, some of the action scenes that I'm seeing right n...

Aquatic Blue Rangers And Mermaids: Dyna Blue And Blue Lightspeed Ranger

Image
Power Rangers does get ideas from very old Super Sentai seasons then modifies them. Chad Lee himself feels like a huge tribute to Hirohisa Soda's aquatic blues like Yousuke Shima, Ryuta Nanbara, and Ken Hoshikawa instead of his GogoFive counterpart Nagare Tatsumi. If we're going to go before Soda, Kinya Samejima had a shark motif going on. Chad being different than Nagare ended up introducing something new for Power Rangers. Dynaman episode 11 has Yousuke meeting a mermaid and the enemy getting involved in this rather complicated situation. Jashinka plans to use the animals of the ocean to cause havoc towards the surface world. I wonder, did Yousuke have a crush on the mermaid during that episode? The mermaid like almost every other guest in Tokusatsu shows only appeared for one episode. There wasn't really much interaction but the idea was revived years later in Power Rangers. Lightspeed Rescue did not have one but two episodes trying to explore Chad's and Mar...

My Thoughts on the Hilarious Dynaman Parody Dub

Image
The Dynaman Parody Dub is no doubt, utterly stupid but entertaining.  It was a six episode dub of the original Dynaman series, which took selected episodes and modified the whole story for the sake of being a parody.  Now here's what has changed: First the Dynamen.  Dr. Kyutaro (Dr. Ho) gathers the Dynamen who are five good-looking Japanese from all walks of life.  Stupid reason to choose them... which unless he knew of their capabilities but what do you expect from a parody?  The names are changed to Wooshi (Red), Huba (Black), Franky (Blue), Cowboy (Yellow) and Slojin (Pink, though she hates pink).  I thought even how they were selected was funny.  And the show is full of exaggerated humor like Dr. Ho's saying he has tried a new bullet train that goes from Hong Kong to Tokyo, but it was a tiny train... hehehehehe!!! The enemies are radically changed into people who just do evil antics.  Emperor Aton is now Bernie Tanaka and General Kar is ...

That Silly Dynaman Parody Dub

Image
I was wondering why of all Super Sentai in the past before the dawn of Power Rangers did the Dynaman Parody Dub appear.  So yeah, while the Dino Thunder watching Abaranger on TV was more of a bad dub than a gag one for me, this was a short series that gag dubbed selected that lasted for six episodes.  It was aired in 1987 in the USA Network's Night Flight.  So far here's the name changes: Hokuto Dan- Wooshi Ryu Hoshikawa- Huba Yousuke Shima- Franky (same dub name with Ryuta Nanbara in the English dub of Bioman) Kosaku Nangou- Cowboy Rei Tachibana- Slojin Dr. Yumeno- Dr. Ho Kendo Robo- Comic Relief Machine Emperor Aton- Bernie Tanaka who is changed to a producer General Kar- Mel Fujitsu Prince Megiddo- Nigel Cochran Chimera- Lucy Tail Soldiers- Reptiles that go "wee" As far as concerned, it's full of cheesy humor and some rather weird outcomes.  For example, how in the world does Megiddo's tail KEEP GROWING?  Well the answer lies in the footage ...

Ninjas in Sentai Before Kakuranger

Image
While there were Shinkenger clues, there seems to be Kakuranger clues also.  Here ar they: Ryuu Hoshikawa/Dyna Black- He was a descendant of ninjas and had ninja skills. Haruka/Yellow Mask- She was raised as a ninja and a very tough girl.

Wedding Whacking Episodes in Super Sentai

Image
Well there's the idea of the June bride so I thought it might feature the wedding whacking in Super Sentai and what it was supposed to be. Here they are: In Dynaman episode 13, Frog Shinka was sent by the Jashinka as a means to kidnap the brides and make them marry the awful monster.  However the plan was foiled by Rei Tachibana who got caught in the process but it was part of her plan to rescue the others.   In Turboranger episode 12, the wicked Jarmin unleashed Sigh Bouma to steal love away from the women that it eventually reached marriages.  Zulten teased Jarmin about her trying to impress her established lover Zimba even more.  Eventually the fake marriage of Riki and Haruna caught Sigh Bouma off-guard and broke her broom so they can beat her. In Jetman episode 20, the Vacuum Jigen was out there stealing the hearts of women who are about to be married as a means to cease the human race from continuing their line.  It was an episode where a c...

Sentai Main Villains Betrayed By Their Subordinates

Image
Some Sentai villains were temporarily and others permanently overthrown by their own subordinates. Some of them were betrayed because their subordinates turned good, others betrayed as a result of evil naturally results to double-crossing. Here are they: Emperor Aton in Dynaman was overthrown and killed by his own son Prince Megiddo whom he disowned for failure. This dethroned him as the final villain. Dr. Man in Bioman was betrayed by the Big Three in episode 29 when Mason learned he was a human being. The Big Three attempted to kill him only to kill a mechaclone instead of the real Dr. Man. He however returned triumphantly and reprogrammed the Big Three to remain loyal to him until the end of his term. Bazoo the Living Planet in Changeman was betrayed by Giluke but he succeeded in teaching him a lesson. He was betrayed by a now restored Shima, by Buuba who was returned to his senses and by Gator the Navigator. In his case though, Shima and Gator betrayed him when one wa...
