Five Factors That May Contribute To Why Action Scenes Have Been Less Badass From Carranger Up To Present

Image
It may be a good idea to take a look at the 40 years of Super Sentai with how they did with action scenes. While Zyuohger like a huge chunk of Super Sentai from Carranger up to present have action scenes but they aren't like the ones I love from old school Super Sentai. I want to make this speculation to what led to a reduction of the quality of action scenes. I have to remember I'm not watching Wuxia films and series but Super Sentai while I'm writing this post.

Super Sentai Teams That Fought With Their Weapons Out Of Suit

Image
Looking back at the glorious fighting out-of-suit scenes in Super Sentai and extension Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, Metal Hero, and Other Heroes for the past couple of years (but screw you ToQGer and Ninninger for not doing that), some Super Sentai groups went from the traditional "beating mooks out of suit and just your fists and kicks" to actually drawing weapons. I still felt like, "WTF!" at times but again, the theme may have called for it. The question is where did they even store it? I even wanted to question where do they keep their weapons when they're not fighting in suits? Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger Unlike its predecessors, Zyuranger was based on warrior tribes' lineage. That theme would get repeated over and over again in several other series. Some did it better, others didn't but you can't deny how the Zyurangers went from traditional fighting unarmed against foot soldiers (and at times monsters) unmorphed but also that they really fough...

More Mecha May Mean Less Intense Action Scenes?

Image
Only one Takeru truly dominates the scene with better action scenes By observing some old school and new school Super Sentai, I tend to notice that there seems to be this trend that if there's more mecha into the show then you might as well expect lower quality or less intense action scenes. I'm writing this considering Zyuohger has brought in back the badly needed DYI stunts from the main cast (with ToQGer and Ninninger really lacked), now it's time to go backward and forward with Super Sentai. As said, just because a series is newer doesn't mean it's always better . Sometimes, you get a good season succeeded by a bad season and a bad season succeeded by a good season. Remembering some old school Super Sentai maybe I'll set the distance up to Ohranger, there seems to be the trend that when there's more mecha, there's less intense action scenes in Super Sentai. Granted, Ohranger was rumored to have nearly cancelled Super Sentai as there was some bud...

Dairanger And Gekiranger: Handling Chinese Themed Sentai

Image
Happy Chinese New Year! It's time for me to talk about Chinese-based Super Sentai. You might be wondering why Hikari Sentai Maskman isn't here. Maskman used mixed martial arts from both Chinese and Japanese influence. What's so strange about Super Sentai is that while it's a Japanese series, it utilizes more foreign themes. After so many Western themes, they also decided to do Chinese themes. Gosei Sentai Dairanger Dairanger happens to be the first Chinese-themed Super Sentai . Compared to Maskman, the Dairangers used Chinese style fighting. These fighting styles happen to be based on Chinese martial arts namely Ryou uses Dragon Fist, Daigo uses Hung Ga, Shoji uses Long Fist, Kazu uses Drunken Fist and Rin uses Eagle Fist Style. Although most of the Dairangers were presumably Japanese but we have both Ryou and Rin as the first half-Chinese members of a Super Sentai team. Rin spoke a few lines in mandarin but it's obviously memorized. Ryou hasn't spoken any ...

My Favorite Red Ranger Fist Techniques

Image
Here's a list of my favorite Super Sentai red ranger fist techiques namely... Kenichi/Goggle Red's Red Punch in Goggle V was just awesome delivering all those blows.  I'm glad he managed to use it more than once.  It was fun to see him use it against Deathgiller in their first one-on-one duel.  I guess we all see it in slow motion but it's really done that fast! Takeru/Red Mask had this powerful "god fist" attack which her refused to believe was real but Sugata corrected such faulty thinking.  He was learning of the "god fist" technique.  I say that whole punch was awesome since it really punched the stomach of the monster with a hole but amazingly the monster lived from that :P.  Maybe I should add this into the list of the insanely awesome moments.  Regardless, I consider this the ultimate fist of the 80s Super Sentai especially with its interesting backstory.   Ryu/Red Hawk had his own special punch attack in Jetman but it ...

Sentai's Most Insanely Awesome Moments!

Image
In Super Sentai, some moments were just too ridiculously awesome in the sense that I can say "what the?" yet it's also worth applauding because of the awesomeness.  Here are they in no particular order... Yuuma's bad singing manages to save the day from Zonos.  Though I got a good laugh but it was also awesome. Changeman's final battle with Bazoo where their robot beats him from the inside. Red Flash's final battle with Kaura could have killed Red Flash but he did win despite all the whippings his body received.  Kaura did survive to create a dramatic finish too. Baraba's demise at the hands of Red Mask.  While his Holy Prism Sword was supposedly invincible against the Jet Cannon, Red Mask BROKE it in his final battle with Baraba before killing the latter. Red Turbo's final battle with Rehda.  It was insane as Rehda trapped him in a ghost dimension, Red Turbo could have been destroyed by Jarmin's and Zimba's ghosts yet he go...

Types of Sentai Fighting Scenes

Image
So far I think Super Sentai has some types of fighting scenes we can notice. Here are some of them: We have the traditional flips and kicks in a fight, whether in suit or out of suit. In fact, doing all the tumbling, back flips and rolls make a fight scene good.  Of course raw fist fighting accompanied by kicks is really cool in Sentai, it's the most common stuff that fuels the fight scenes. Maskman, Dairanger and Gekiranger really had all those fists of fury which almost equaled the majesty of Chinese action cinema. It happens usually with civilian fight scenes then transitions to suited scenes. Air combat and jump kicks are another way of fighting. We have the classic self-defense grabs used. There are also motorcycle stunts which was very prevalent during the 90s sentai when motorbikes were frequently used. Lately there hasn't been much of this for some reason. We just can't do without a good old one-on-one battles can we? In fact, despite it being cliche...

Sentai With the Most Martial Arts

Image
Sentai has been known for its action scenes which overrides the Power Rangers franchise (which is the western adaptation). So far here are the groups I would like to rank really do perform the most jaw dropping moves ever. #1- Dairanger is for me the one that performs the most martial arts. Clearly this classic super sentai presented the most number of awesome moves since it is based on Chinese fighting styles which in cinema is the most notorious for super duper exaggerated fighting scenes. #2- Gekiranger is another to focus on Chinese martial arts. This time they portray different beast styles but Dairanger seems to be better in my opinion. #3- Kakuranger. These ninja masters were another of the most unforgettable martial artists for sentai. #4- Maskman is the first to promote Chinese martial arts. The show itself focused on the use of aura power and different martial arts techniques. Nobody can forget Takeru's karate or Haruka's ninjitsu. #5- Dekaranger though...
