Super Sentai: Actual Pairing VS. Fan Shippings

Image
It's Valentine's Day today and I can't resist writing this post. As I grow older, I discovered that I've been watching love stories A LOT. I mean A LOT. Super Sentai has attempted love stories like any other superhero show. Some superhero shows tried to mix in love interests. However, most love interests tend to be treated like, "POOF! They're never remembered!" Super Sentai  doesn't focus too much on love stories -- presumably because the target audience is younger children.  When Super Sentai writes love stories for the heroes that go beyond a guest-starring Super Sentai rangers tend to have one-shot love interests. The Hirohisa Soda introduced one-shot love interests. Dengeki Sentai Changeman had Mai Ooishi fall in love with a scientist BUT he's treated like every guest character. However, Hikari Sentai Maskman put a love story experiment of sorts. Maskman Takeru has his Tossho Daimos type of romance with Princess Ial (disguised as Mio). Maskm...

Boonboomger 20 Made Me Think About Super Sentai Rangers With Civilian Love Interests, One Shot And Recurring Ones

I may not be doing episode reviews (so I could focus on other stuff). However, I felt like doing this episode because of the return of Norio in a semi-comedic episode. I guess there wouldn't be any more overly somber episodes like episodes 14-15 -- which were probably tributes to the late Yuka Motohashi. As I was watching this episode -- I realized that Norio was from episode 1. Yes, that same episode where Mira was almost forcibly wed and I think she's too young to be a bride. So much for that Lightspeed Rescue! I never expected Norio to get into a future episode. Most possible love interests simply fizzle out and never get heard from again. One can talk about Canalo's long list of unrequited romances . One-shot love interests were a common trope during the Hirohisa Soda era. Mai in Dengeki Sentai Changeman fell for a scientist for one episode. Kenta in Hikari Sentai Maskman was pretty much into that. Kasumi in Chikyu Sentai Fiveman also had a one-shot love interest acted...

Shipping Talk: Why I'm A Keiichiro X Tsukasa Shipper

Image
A lot of Super Sentai series usually don't have official pairings but some come close to it. Others do tend to tease audiences with possible shippings like how Shinkenger may have triggered the whole Takeru x Mako ship vs. Takeru x Kotoha ship (she did turn 18 during the show so it's legal). Then I think of one crack ship I like to try is Keiichiro x Tsukasa. It's past Valentine's Day but I don't see any reason why I can't write this outrageous pairing. The show (in earlier episodes) seemed to be shipping them even if they never got lovey-dovey. Episode 4  started to show their past together. Keiichiro secretly knew about Tsukasa's fondness for stuffed animals - which in turn resulted in him figuring out how the teleportation devices work. TBH, I kinda wish we got a scene where Keiichiro gives Tsukasa a stuffed animal! The flashback of their earlier days is also something. I really thought that the flashbacks earlier on in  episode 6  really tempted m...

Super Sentai's Hopeless Romantic Rangers

Image
Today is Valentine's Day and somehow it's become the norm to tease someone for being dateless. Well, some Super Sentai heroes are just hopeless romantics. I'd like to make a list of them just right here... Shou Hayate/Change Griffin Before there was Gai Yuki - there was Shou Hayate, right? He joined the military to impress the ladies which is just dumb. So, why didn't he get a mandatory haircut because his hair doesn't fit in? This guy did also nearly court Queen Ahames in disguise too. Also, there seems to be some shipping between him and Sakura. Dai/Green Flash While not really a womanizer - he does have a weak spot for women. He did fall in love with a flower shop owner who was never mentioned again. So, what's with superhero shows and one-shot love interests that just get forgotten? Though he does seem to put his weak spot under control due to years of disciplinary training at Planet Flash. Kenta/Black Mask This guy is Maskman's second-in-...

Ryusoulger 29: Well, What Do You Expect?

Image
Is it me or is Canaro's quest to find a bride getting really annoying? This episode though has the gag with a bit of a twist. How does it happen? Just read on to find out or watch it if you haven't! The episode begins with Canaro and Yui both looking at the junkyard. I really admit that there's such a thing as the consequence of commercialism and consumerism. When people care more about spending -- they get rid of old stuff that could've still been used. I remembered the Jetman episode where Ako disdains over the dumping of usable stuff while she got rid of her worn-out teddy bear. It seems Canaro already has found a bride but... she wants him not to do anything dangerous. Canaro communicates his despair to Mosa Rex. He has found a potential bride BUT he mustn't do anything dangerous. But he's a Ryusoulger! He has a higher duty? What duty will he answer to?  A new monster known as the Poltergeist Menasaur is eating trash. At first, it sounds good...

Is Canaro Finding A Bride Getting Really Annoying?

Image
Here's a magazine scan that shows the women Canaro had passed through and one of them was just Wizeru in disguise. This makes me think that his quest to find a bride is really either funny or just getting annoying. Canaro's heartbroken gag might not be good for Ryusoulger's development in the long run.  Do you remember all his possible love interests? Two already had somebody (and that karate episode IMHO was just weak), two were already married (and he possibly embodied the feelings of Yukari Taki fanboys), he even attempted to go with Master Pink (which really just feels weird), and he tried to woo a woman out of her depression only for him to be left behind. Like, his luckless state is becoming too much of a running gag! It's a mistake that's more common for non-professional writers like myself. However, let's not forget that Spongebob's writers are trained writers but the running gags have gone on since Spongebob's premiere up to the present. L...
