Where Does Turboranger Possibly Stand Among Power Rangers Fans Checking Out Super Sentai?

Image
Power Morphicon is getting more Super Sentai guests huh? What even surprises me is that Kamen Rider Decade's actor, Masahiro Inoue, is also guesting. I still think Decade has to be the worst Kamen Rider from the Heisei era. I still call it the spiritual successor of Saban's Masked Rider . This surprises me that Kenta Sato was invited instead of Yuji Kishi. If I'm not wrong, the rumor that Gekisou Sentai Carranger "saved" Super Sentai was also from Rangerboard. Yeah, there are so many rumors disproven now such as the Power Rangers Lost Galaxy rumor in Japan. Right now, it might only be a matter of time before Turboranger gets an official Shout! Factory release.  The concept of teenagers with attitude wasn't all that ready yet Turboranger was practically the Trope Codifier of Recruit Teenagers with Attitude. I guess that's why the show didn't immediately click. The production crew (which also involved Takeyuki Suzuki) and the head writer Hirohisa Soda h...

Recalling How Super Sentai Did Ranger History Lessons

Image
There are many terminologies commonly used in Power Rangers that I still welcome. Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters used the terms "It's Morphin' Time" and Megazords. As the anniversary of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers approaches - Let's look at the past Ranger History lessons that Super Sentai did even before Saban Entertainment got its green light.  The first Ranger History lesson happened during Kosoku Sentai Turboranger's "first episode" Turboranger can be a very strange season and I can understand why some people don't like it. Kaiju No Kami's review pointed out how Denji Sentai Megaranger made Recruit Teenagers with Attitude WAY MORE BELIEVABLE. I'd still say Turboranger is still unfairly maligned and it deserves some credit for ACTUALLY TRYING NEW THINGS. Sure, the Bouma main characters are lame personifications of wickedness (as they are pretty much Stupid Evil and For the Evulz). I even want to agree with Kaiju No Kami that Emperor...

Five Areas Where I Think Carranger Shifted Into Turbo Better Than Turboranger

Image
It's no secret that I have had shifting preferences between Turboranger and Carranger . It's really THAT obvious that Carranger does take some pointers from Turboranger even if both shows have some glaring differences. Both Turboranger and Carranger also suffer from lower ratings. Turboranger was the beginning of the decline of Hirohisa Soda. Soda would later do some episodes for Carranger as a secondary writer. Carranger hardly raised ratings up since Ohranger's low ratings. Both shows suffered from rating drop yet were somewhat vindicated by history. Carranger DVD sales by Shout! Factory led to the Megaranger DVD sales. Turboranger may have also been vindicated over time as more people got to really follow it in spite of the glaring flaws.  Back on topic... I'd like to show five areas where I think Carranger did better than Turboranger... Carranger DID have a more Turbo team than the teens with a ttitude for Turboranger I may be a fan of Turboranger but I feel the w...

How Turboranger Played Out Zordon's Threefold Rule Before Mighty Morphin' Came To Existence

Image
It's not very uncommon in the superhero genre (or how heroes in the past wrote under obvious pen names before the birth of comic book heroes) where the hero keeps their alter-ego secret. Toei Ltd. did work with Marvel Comics, Marvel Comics later had a license with Saban Ltd. in the 90s (and Toei Ltd. followed up too), Disney (and strangely, Disney had the Power Rangers license from Toei Ltd.), and Toei Ltd. also worked as animation studio for Hasbro then Hasbro currently has the rights to the Power Rangers franchise. That show in the late 1980s was Kosoku Sentai Turboranger -- the first Super Sentai entry that dealt with teenagers with attitude instead of mostly mature heroes. Sure, some teenagers did join the group such as  Hikari Sentai Maskman had   Akira and Chojin Sentai Jetman had Ako Hayasaka. The concept was later revived in Denji Sentai Megaranger . We also had Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers which blatantly told the three rules at the first episode's end. These are ...

Turboranger Episode 40's Flashback Somehow Doesn't Compute Well Into The Wandering Bouma Story

Image
While rewatching Kosoku Sentai Turboranger - I thought that one thing I didn't notice was the flashback in its 40th episode. It's this flashback of Yamimaru with an infant Kirika and the two Skull Monsters that raised her in the 1970s. I just can't help but agree with Shogo B'Stard when he says the following in this  episode review : The really big problem for me. When Yamimaru is explaining the motivation behind his plan to the Turboranger, we're shown a clip of Yamimaru in old times, walking with bloodied feet. He's not alone, though, he's wandering the land with the skull monsters who raised Kirika, who have with them BABY KIRIKA! What fucking sense does this make? The skull monsters raised Kirika as a baby in the human world starting in the early '70s. So how and why and what are they doing walking the earth with Yamimaru? Also: Yamimaru didn't know shit about Kirika, even when she was appearing to him in prophetic dreams! He pretty much chanced ...

How Carranger Tends To Make Me Think Go-Onger Is A Messy Grand Prix

Image
Right now, I'm doing some Kosoku Sentai Turboranger rewatching after Wandering Moonbeams finished the subbing before Shout! Factory could ever grab the license. I was thinking that while it's difficult not to think about Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers while watching Turboranger - Gekisou Sentai Carranger also comes to my mind! Carranger eventually brings in Engine Sentai Go-Onger to my mind as well. I usually love the slapstick of Go-Onger but Carranger just makes the former look like it's a bloated mess. Just because I don't like Power Rangers doesn't mean I'm going to spare Super Sentai from some of my own personal opinions. Carranger was a show that actually didn't save Super Sentai - it was Denji Sentai Megaranger that did the job of saving Super Sentai after two years of low ratings! Carranger is a show that you probably can't easily absorb though the DVD sales were a success. So, I saw Go-Onger first... Granted, I saw Go-Onger first and decided ...

How Turboranger May Have Inspired Carranger And Megaranger

Image
The fact that Kosoku Sentai Turboranger has been subbed brings two more series to mind. These series are Gekisou Sentai Carranger and Denji Sentai Megaranger . I heard Turboranger had its struggle, got unfairly maligned (and was underappreciated), and may have been vindicated by history after all to the point of overappreciation. Turboranger was the first Heisei era Super Sentai as well. Turboranger was also a show that was full of experimental concepts such as teenagers with attitude (hence the true trope codifier, not Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers ), automobiles for mecha (though the secondary mecha was a turbojet), and enemies that were sealed for centuries until they were released into the modern-day setting. The series was the start of the Heisei era while it signaled the end of the Hirohosa Soda era . Soda's era finally came to an end with Chikyu Sentai Fiveman - the series that nearly ended Super Sentai! Yup, you'll probably still hear more people preferring Kyukyu...
