Five Areas Where I Think Carranger Shifted Into Turbo Better Than Turboranger

It's no secret that I have had shifting preferences between Turboranger and Carranger. It's really THAT obvious that Carranger does take some pointers from Turboranger even if both shows have some glaring differences. Both Turboranger and Carranger also suffer from lower ratings. Turboranger was the beginning of the decline of Hirohisa Soda. Soda would later do some episodes for Carranger as a secondary writer. Carranger hardly raised ratings up since Ohranger's low ratings. Both shows suffered from rating drop yet were somewhat vindicated by history. Carranger DVD sales by Shout! Factory led to the Megaranger DVD sales. Turboranger may have also been vindicated over time as more people got to really follow it in spite of the glaring flaws.

Back on topic... I'd like to show five areas where I think Carranger did better than Turboranger...

Carranger DID have a more Turbo team than the teens with attitude for Turboranger

I may be a fan of Turboranger but I feel the whole teens with attitude with car magic is just one weird mix. You know, weird experiments do happen. Carranger's heroes are all professional workers at the Pegasus Garage. It does make sense for Dappu to actually dub five "unremarkable civilians" with Car Magic Powers who work in a garage. It does make me wonder what logic Seelon had in choosing five teenagers with attitude to become the Turborangers. Carranger did manage to create a more Turbo team by having employees in the Pegasus Garage become the rangers instead of high schoolers.

I felt that the Carrangers had better character development (and balance) than Turboranger

Turboranger can be criticized for a lack of development in some ways. Carranger did manage to carry out its characters a little bit more realistically. Unlike Riki, Kyousuke isn't that overpowered and is given some intentional flaws to develop him as a character. For example, Kyousuke tried to leave his team, or that he does clash with Natsumi. Natsumi is pretty much a full-season version of Mika Koizumi from Bioman. I felt that Kyousuke not actually defeating two major villains himself was a refresher. All the heroes got to share their flaws and develop as a result of it. I felt it was weird that Riki managed to survive a ONE-ON-ONE fight with Ragorn - badass but somewhat still weird. I think Kyousuke would've probably been vaporized if he fought Exhaus one-on-one. Carranger seems to be more consistent with the power levels of its heroes than Turboranger ever was.

Carranger had mecha more TURBO than that of Turboranger

Turboranger did have some weird choice of mecha to mix into it. I wonder what were the producers even thinking? Sure, Turboranger had an automobile mecha then they ended up introducing a fighter jet into the mix. Added into the mix is the Turbo Builder which DOES NOT move beyond its location. Carranger seemed to really be more consistent with the Turbo mecha. First, we had RV Robo which is basically an improved version of Turbo Robo. After RV Robo was temporarily missing -- we had VRV Robo to the rescue. The Victory Trailer is the transport system of the VRV Robo's components. VRV Robo is also made of rescue vehicles that can go humanoid when need be. I think that VRV Robo would've probably made better work out of the Chomajin Bouma from Turboranger's 30th episode faster than the Super Turbo Robo.

Carranger's subordinate villain plots were a little more consistent

One of Turboranger's controversial moments was the end of the three Bouma generals and the arrival of the Nagare Bouma. I heard that this was probably due to low ratings which may have resulted to payroll issues. Some say it was because Masashi Ishibashi wanted to leave the show. Carranger did manage to be a little more consistent with the show's villains since the original trio (and their muse Zonette) managed to stay from start to end. Only Ritchhiker (who arrived midseason) was written off and he wasn't all that interesting TBH. I guess Toei was more careful this time round to the point that the Bowzock's three main villains and their muse didn't end up leaving in the middle of the season! Turboranger's villain change IMHO didn't do much (and it just got pointless with Zulten still around) unlike how Carranger managed to deal with it. Rika Nanase probably never had the same issues as Kanako Kishi had in Turboranger.

I feel Emperor Exhaus was more well-executed than Emperor Ragorn as the main villain of the series

Emperor Exhaus was a villain that only arrived midseason yet man does this guy do more than Ragorn could. Ragorn may be scarier (for some) while Exhaus still has some good scare points. Ragorn tends to be portrayed as the villain who simply accepts his Bouma generals' (and later, the Nagare Boumas') crazy plans for world domination. Meanwhile, Exhaus himself (as the true villain) was actually more involved in the planning process than Ragorn ever was. Not to mention, Exhaus even managed to return in the finale DEFEATING the Carrangers' mecha. It took a super ridiculous shot of expired sweet potato jelly from Gynamo to finally weaken him. I felt Ragorn's defeat in the final episode of Turboranger was just too rushed. Though, I still wish that Exhaus sentenced the Bowzock to destroy the Carrangers or never return. Maybe, we can also give Exhaus bonus points for NOT being defeated by the red ranger in a one-on-one duel and getting written off for a short time too.

What do you think? Do you think these are the five areas that Carranger managed to shift into Turbo over Turboranger?

Comments

  1. Needless to say, I believe last year's Kiramager managed to shift into Turbo, more ways than the likes of Turboranger, Carranger, and Go-Onger combined, enough said.
