The Gaoranger Arc And Gao King's Return, After Daizyujin

Image
No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger has been slowly reviving Megazords. The first Megazord brought back was Daizyujin . Now, it's Gao King from the ANNIVERSARY series Hyajakuu Sentai Gaoranger . They could've brought back Battle Fever Robo from Battle Fever J first. Instead, we had Daizyujin followed by Gao King. Gaoranger was localized ( which is still a form of adaptation, business-wise ) into Power Rangers Wild Force .  The recent Universe Warrior Red Ranger is Gaia Todoroki -- an ANIMAL PROTECTION OFFICER. I did some research realizing that while Gaia is supposedly a feminine name -- Japanese tend to use the name GAIYA. So I'll call Todoroki here as GAIYA NOT GAIA. It's a sob story with Luna -- who SPOILER ALERT -- DOESN'T MAKE IT! Super Sentai may have been hit with censorship since 2001 (and yes, Gaoranger was getting tame and blood has been ridiculously LOW), BUT it hasn't spared the show from rather heartwrenching moments! Luna is a veterinarian whom he developed a bo...

Hyajakuu Sentai Gaoranger: An Anniversary Season That Felt Like It Was Meant To Reboot Super Sentai

Image
2021 is a major anniversary year for several Toku series. Some may think of the beginning of the first Kamen Rider or the 20th anniversary of Kamen Rider Agito . Now, one series also gets its 20th anniversary this year and it's Hyajakuu Sentai Gaoranger . The series itself feels like a reboot series while it's an anniversary season. The reasons are these. The Year 2000 can mean a lot of things. For some people, 2000 AD is the beginning of a new millennium - something that was emphasized in Mirai Sentai Timeranger . 2000 AD was also the beginning of a new era for Kamen Rider while I felt it was going to be the end of another Super Sentai era . The Kamen Rider franchise was going to get rebooted with Kamen Rider Kuuga . Meanwhile, Timeranger felt it was dropping hints and there that it was going to be the end of one era of Super Sentai. Just think of how the finale went with them saying a new era has begun. The post-series TV special eventually recollected all the Super Sentai ...

Guilt-Ridden Gao Silver And Zyuoh The World

Image
After seeing this week's Zyuohger, I wanted to write on this short entry. Misao Mondo has now officially joined the team but  I can't blame him for his total wreck. I mean, he did something horrible (in a way). Zyuoh The World's guilt If you remembered in this week's episode, Misao admitted that he accepted the offer by Deathgalien because he was a loner. In a way, it's a Faustian pact with them. Although he DID NOT take the life of the three Zyumen (names unknown) but it can't be denied that off-screen, Genis shows some off-screen cruelty and who knows what's next. The temporary and short-term nightmare fuel with the scene where he's being converted into a Zyuman was something.

The Tale Of Three Eagle Swordsmen!

Image
While watching Zyuohger, it's time to review on the eagle swordsmen. So here's the list aside from Yamato Kazakiri. Let's get started shall we? Takayuki Hiba/Vul Eagle II The tale of two eagles made Sun Vulcan feel it was two shows. Ryuusuke Oowashi left the set and the much better Takayuki Hiba took over. What contribution did Takayuki give to to Super Sentai? It's all about them red rangers who fought valiantly with swords . I felt like Sun Vulcan's first half was pretty boring and Ryuusuke wasn't all that interesting. I preferred Takayuki with his cool use of his katana against the Black Magma. Not even one of my favorites Takeru Shiba as a red ranger got as cool as he did. A lot of cool sword moves were introduced especially the Hiba Turning Slash. It was the start of a revolution for the sword arena. Plus, we had legendary stuntman Kazuo Niibori from Goggle V up to Jetman. He was an expert swordsman and red ranger stunt double. A lot of stunts wer...

Super Sentai Anniversary Sixth Heroes And The Power Of Three!

Image
Considering that Misao Mondo/Zyuoh The World is an anniversary Super Sentai sixth ranger, I thought of writing this post concerning his predecessors. The appearance of yet another sixth ranger having the power of three in Zyuohger is no surprise to me at all! Misao is powered by three Zyumen and has a wolf, crocodile and rhino as part of his symbols. Let's take a look back at the others who have the power of three as well. Shirogane/Gao Silver (25th Anniversary) Gao Silver is the very first sixth ranger who gets a combining mecha instead of a regular non-combining mecha. This may be because Gaoranger is the start of the multi-gattai era and the may be the beginning of a new era of Super Sentai. The Gao Hunter is a combining robot composed of Gao Wolf, Gao Alligator and Gao Hammerhead. He's the very first sixth hero to have not one but three assigned mecha at once. Fair enough, the Gaorangers were getting more than one Gao Animal in their inventory so the sixth rang...

Feeling Old? It's Been Four Post-Timeranger Super Sentai Anniversary Seasons Already!

Image
I was thinking of the anniversaries that happened. Turboranger celebrated 10 years of Super Sentai before it from Battle Fever J up to Liveman. Ohranger would later celebrate 20 years of Super Sentai when Goranger and JAKQ were later retroactively added into the list of Super Sentai seasons. Then Timeranger came in which I consider was a "finale" for a certain era of Super Sentai (which I don't know how to divide the eras yet) but it was the 24th Super Sentai season. Gaoranger became a new era opener. I'll also give some of my thoughts on the possible developments behind Zyuohger which is currently airing.  Super Sentai's  25th Anniversary: Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger Gaoranger was the beginning of a whole new era where most Super Sentai had more mecha and less action . Timeranger closed the era where Super Sentai could get that serious and a whole lot more action scenes. Not even Gekiranger or Go-Busters felt that serious as Liveman, Dairanger or Timeran...

Gaoranger's Christmas Special

Image
Ninninger's Christmas episode also reminded me of this Christmas episode in Gaoranger which was somewhat predictable, somewhat not predictable. At the start of the episode, we see a Chrsitmas Org (which looks like a badly done version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) giving gifts to children. He does look harmless. At first, I expected that this Org would be like the Charcoal Org. Charcoal Org unlike the other Orgs was a good monster. I would admit that I was hoping it was a good monster.

Wishful Thinking: Gaku Washio Meets Gaku Hoshikawa!!!!

Image
No doubt Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai is indeed a great crossover movie with nostalgic action. While I do still like the Boukenger vs. Super Sentai movie (the Boukengers at least weren't moving like drunks in that film) but the first is better, here's just my minor wishful thinking for the Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai movie. Now for the movie, we had Red Falcon meeting Gaku Washio to train him with the sword. It was awesome no questions asked but I did want this to happen, which could have made it more fun as well. Hehehehe, Gaku Washio's about to meet another Gaku and my choice is actually make him meet... Gaku Hoshikawa! Looking at that episode Gaku trains with his swordsmanship, he is also a teacher... what if Gaku Washio met Gaku Hoshikawa? Now don't get me wrong, I do like Yuusuke better than Gaku Hoshikawa but I wanted the movie to do the pun of Gaku meeting Gaku. My imagined dialogue is this... Gaku Hoshikawa meets Gaku Washio. He says, "We don't ...

Is Gaoranger Also a Huge Tribute to Old Sentai Seasons?

Image
Considering Gaoranger IS Sentai's 25th Anniversary, I really can't help but think the series is a HUGE tribute to its predecessors.  Let's take a look at it this way: Kakeru Shishi/Gao Red.  He's the second red ranger to have a lion emblem, the first was Ryouma/Ginga Red from Gingaman.  Like Shiro from Bioman, he can talk to animals (which thus helps him in his job).  He like Jou/Yellow Lion has the lion motiff and a small cannon for a weapon. Gaku Washio/Gao Yellow- He shares the same name with Five Red, Gaku Hoshikawa.  Both of them had flying mecha.  His Gaoranger suit also resembles that of Jetman, having its retractable wings similar to the Jetman suits.  He is also the second one with the eagle sign, the first being the two Vul Eagles of Sun Vulcan.  Like the Jetmen, he is also an airforce pilot, possibly a reference to Ryu. Kai Samezu/Gao Blue- He is the second blue ranger with a shark emblem, the first being Kinya Samejina/Vul Sh...

Episode Writers' Analysis Part 10: Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger

Image
Well I'm back and here's for Gaoranger, another of Takegami's head writing jobs and sadly, not so many major writers aside from him.  I mean, I felt like Megaranger was great with the Takegami/Kobayashi/Arakawa team... now moving on. Junki Takegami (main writer): 1-18, 20, 22-23, 25, 27-28, 32-40, 44, 48-51 (38 eps) This is Takegami's writing of Gaoranger.  So he was Gogo V's head writer after Megaranger and he was also an Anime writer himself.  Now for the episode analysis of this guy for all the 38 episodes! Episodes 1-2 introduces us the introduction of what Gaoranger will be.  Episode 1 has Kakeru in introduction, the biases that Gaku has on Kakeru (which I can understand because he is after all imo more qualified) and the introduction of the Orgs' mission against humanity.  I love how Kakeru shows he has his ability to talk to animals used in a bigger way compared to Shiro's in Bioman (which was for me, pretty experimental at that stage).  It a...

The Three Highnesses of Gaoranger

Image
Gaoranger was interesting for me with its three Highness Arcs.  They were born the moment some Highness was needed.  Here are my thoughts on them when it came to the three Highness Arcs which three different big bads took over and were eventually merged into the ultimate Big Bad, Senki. Org Highness Shuten- He had a short temper but at least he didn't treat Yabaiba and Tsuetsue as trash.  The fact that he decided to battle the Gaorangers' to a final battle was cool.  He started out pretty standard as a the first big bad.  Later he got serious with blocking the Gao Soul, cruelly thrashing the Gaorangesr until Pyo-Chan restored the Gao Souls.  Shuten was defeated by the newly restored Gao King then was killed by the new Org Highess, Ura. Org Highness Ura- I thought he made the show more interesting with his subtle plots such as resurrecting Loki.  His action of resurrecting Loki brought some conflict when he got the Giraffe, Elephant, Panda and Be...

Wedding Whacking Episodes in Super Sentai

Image
Well there's the idea of the June bride so I thought it might feature the wedding whacking in Super Sentai and what it was supposed to be. Here they are: In Dynaman episode 13, Frog Shinka was sent by the Jashinka as a means to kidnap the brides and make them marry the awful monster.  However the plan was foiled by Rei Tachibana who got caught in the process but it was part of her plan to rescue the others.   In Turboranger episode 12, the wicked Jarmin unleashed Sigh Bouma to steal love away from the women that it eventually reached marriages.  Zulten teased Jarmin about her trying to impress her established lover Zimba even more.  Eventually the fake marriage of Riki and Haruna caught Sigh Bouma off-guard and broke her broom so they can beat her. In Jetman episode 20, the Vacuum Jigen was out there stealing the hearts of women who are about to be married as a means to cease the human race from continuing their line.  It was an episode where a c...

Sentai Team Techniques Used Only Once

Image
I overlooked this. Hee hee. Too bad I don't have pictures so I'll just post the teams. They are: The Gorangers executed the Cassiopeia Star Attack against Black Cross Fuehrer in the finale. The Biomen used the Bio Revolver only in episode 2 and the Bio Burn Bar only in episode 3. In the movie, they used the Bio Spectral Flash which was not seen in the series. The Maskmen performed the Aura Power Burst in the final episode against Emperor Zeba. The Jetmen performed the Firebird attack when all five flew and formed a phoenix to attack Radiguet prior to the final battle. The Carrangers used a killer dash technique to destroy a shrunken Emperor Exhaus after Gynamo threw expired imo youkan into their enemy's mouth. The Gaorangers were aided by the revived power animals to destroy Senki. In the movie Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai, the Gaoranger Storm.

Final Villains Who Destroyed Mecha Before They Died

Image
Here are some villains that managed to destroy mecha before their deaths. They are: Emperor Vulgyre- In the finale, not even the Max Magma was a match for him. He was however defeated by the Super Five Robo when he was weakened by the Sidon flowers. Radiguet- He acquired the ultimate monster form by merging with the beast Raguem. He was practically ultra sturdy except for the wound on his back. He destroyed Tetraboy with much ease. After the Jetmen defeated him, their mecha may be beyond repair. Emperor Exhaus- It was pretty cool to see him destroy all the mecha of the Carrangers before he was defeated. That makes him more bad-ass than Ragorn. Final Highness Senki- He managed to destroy the Gaorangers' mecha before he was finally destroyed. He was destroyed by the release of other Gao Animals and the resurrected Gaoranger mecha though. Ironic isn't it? Emperor Doukoku- He managed to destroy the Shinkengers' mecha before his demise.

Sentai Mecha With References to Transformers Robots

Image
Thanks to a suggestion by Guyferd20, it's time to tackle on some robots with similarities to Transformers. They are: 1. These three resemble Superion, all combined by jets: Jet Icarus from Jetman Time Robo Alpha/Beta from Timeranger Dekawing Robo from Dekaranger 2. We have Great Titan from Flashman which the trailer combines with the robot, similar to Ultra Magnus and Super Ginrai. It may have inspired Armada's version of Optimus Prime. 3. The following combination resembles the Transformers Decepticon combiner Menosar: Turbo Robo from Turboranger RV Robo from Carranger 4. The following reminded me of Predaking for their beastly combination. Super Live Robo from Liveman Gao King from Gaoranger 5. The Autobot Combiner Raiden reminds me of the following: Grand Liner from Go Go V Travelion from Magiranger 6. Siren Builder resembles the Autobot Combiner Defensor with the ambulance, police car and firetruck combination 7. Daikaioh remind...
