Times When I Felt Super Sentai Had A Series Reboot

Image
Super Sentai is Toei's longest-running Toku series. Other franchises had a reboot. Kamen Rider had a reboot during the Showa era (which had gaps in between) then Kamen Rider Kuuga rebooted the whole franchise -- maybe we can say Kamen Rider Decade did too or was it Kamen Rider W ? Metal Hero had a reboot treatment when the Space Sheriff Trilogy ended. We can also think that a reboot happened when Winspector came after Jiban . Super Sentai probably has had reboots in its very long run to fit in with the times.  I decided to update this post feeling this post needs to be updated! The first possible reboot was done with Battle Fever J  Goranger and JAKQ weren't all part of the Super Sentai franchise. The first entry before the retcon was Battle Fever J . JAKQ got rushed during 1977 and only ended up with 35 EPISODES. JAKQ was too serious for little children! The Super got introduced into the Super Sentai franchise by 1979 because of the first Megazord -- Battle Fever R...

Was Yasuko Kobayashi Planned To Become King-Ohger's Main Writer? (Spoilers Ahead)

Image
This is an idea that came to mind but I was hesitant to write it. I'm still stuck with Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger and not too excited about Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger -- even NOW! It's probably because King-Ohger felt so different it's more than just something new. I felt King-Ohger's innovation was highly ambitious! It felt more like a serialized Anime series than a Super Sentai . Toshiki Inoue made a comeback in Avatar Sentai Donbrothers -- something I enjoyed more than Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger . With Inoue's return -- I was excited and worried at the same time. Inoue is among the writers who got overused. I even remember a rumor that Kamen Rider Zi-O's head writer would be Yasuko Kobayashi.  As I did more research on Kobayashi -- she also wrote for Attack of Titan -- something I only discovered by researching about her! What I never realized was that some Super Sentai fans have compared it to Attack on Titan . I wonder if Toei actually planned Kobayashi to be t...

Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger Episodes 14-15: Two More Serious Than Usual Episodes In A Row

Image
Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger started with lighthearted vibes. Sure, I'm not doing episode reviews like I used to. I can be updated with the shows at MY OWN PACE. Episodes 14 and 15 have darker tones -- unlike the latest episode (the introduction of the Sixth Ranger). I felt unusually heavy since most episodes were on the balanced side.  Bakuage 14 has some tense drama build-up What creeps me out is the line that Mira said to Shashiro in Bakuage 14. It gets really emotional. It doesn't help Yuka got admitted to a hospital a few days earlier before passing away. Mira's lines really get emotional. I feel the emotional tensions being spoken After 13 episodes of mostly near-TV-Y7-FV episodes -- we get some emotional tensions. Did anybody say PG-7 shouldn't have sad moments? Super Sentai may have been toned down since 2001 -- probably a kneejerk after Mirai Sentai Timeranger may often be berated for being overly serious or serious for the sake of it. Miya's rightfully berat...

The Possible Impact Dekaranger Has On Power Rangers Fans Checking Out Super Sentai

Image
Some time ago, I tackled the rumor that Power Rangers SPD was supposedly more popular than Tokosu Sentai Dekaranger . As Dekarangers turns 20 - I really feel I want to rant on this. Super Sentai was practically overshadowed in the West due to language and cultural barriers. The solution Toei had to cross the cultural barrier is Power Rangers . With Dekaranger having been the first fully fan-subbed (thanks to the TV-Nihon fansub group)  Super Sentai - open-minded Power Rangers fans had the biggest chance to check out what couldn't make it past American censors or work for the majority of the Western market. It may be considered that entirely new experience for them. Dekaranger and SPD had some differences in characterization. What I always keep in mind is that Power Rangers is geared mainly for the Western audience. There are some cultural differences here and there. Jack Landors is pretty much laid back and had an episode he skipped the obstacle course before he did it at th...

Speculation: Where Bioman Possibly Stand Among Power Ranger Fans (Some Spoilers)

Image
I've speculated on the different preferences of Power Rangers fans who check out the source material. Some may actually prefer anything after Mirai Sentai Timeranger  better. Some Power Rangers fans are checking out what's called the pre-Zyuranger era. It can be a challenge since Power Rangers was born in the 1990s. Checking out anything 1970s-1980s means adjusting to different trends. Where does Chodenshi Bioman fit it? Bioman being 40 years old can be a challenge.  Bioman was also considered for Power Rangers and a failed pilot was created I guess Toei and Saban had their timing wrong. Before that, there was the late Stan Lee. 1978 became the time when Toei actually made their own Spider-Man with Marvel's permission. Lee even allowed his voice to be used in the eye-catch . One can wonder how much Toei paid for that. I guess that's why Toei was willing to let Saban adapt (or as prefer to say, localize, because it's tailored for the American audience)  Super Senta...

Revisiting ToQGer's Daring Imaginative Concepts This 2024 (Some Spoilers)

Image
Ressha Sentai ToQGer might be a show that's almost got no middle ground. Some try to defend it to be the best show ever. As an older Super Sentai fan - I'm actually more inclined to prefer most of the older series. Fortunately, there were some decent attempts to remain afloat after Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger . I'd probably still state that Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger was just plain annoying at first glance. Right now, I think Kyoryuger is actually a watchable mess  but it's rather biased. Just think how I find Kamen Rider BLACK RX and B-Fighter Kabuto to be watchable messy shows because the Saban adaptations straight out SUCK. Yeah, I really tried watching B-Fighter Metallix and it's WAY WORSE than the source material. With ToQGer  - I think the show's actually okay. Maybe, I'd say So Okay It's Average because it's almost similar to how Toshiki Inoue was with Kamen Rider Kiva  (and I enjoy that show), Hirohisa Soda with Chikyu Sentai Fiveman , and Junki T...

Speculation: Where Kakuranger Possibly Stands Among Power Rangers Fans

Image
There are always cultural differences between Super Sentai and Power Rangers. My dislike for Power Rangers is partly cultural. I want to launch a speculation about where  Ninja Sentai Kakuranger stands among Power Rangers fans. We've had the DVD releases starting with Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger . Kakuranger had its DVD release and it seems there's no news yet of a Mahou Sentai Magiranger DVD. I tried watching Kakuranger and I feel the series could be more of So Okay It's Average (like Seijuu Sentai Gingaman ) among Power Rangers fans. That's okay because I think most Power Rangers fans may actually enjoy anything after Mirai Sentai Timeranger .  The 1980s to 1990s Super Sentai era can be characterized by stuff that makes you, "What? They show this to children?" After watching Zyuranger , I simply started to understand more why Saban Entertainment (or Fox Kids) didn't just dub it over. Zyuranger has heavy amounts of violence that may no longer be allowed in ...

"Evidences" For A "Super Sentai Expanding Universe"

Image
I visited some old ideas because of  how King-Ohger went and how it decided to be connected to the World of Kyoryuger . Yes, this is really going to be a peculiar post. It's known that Power Rangers' entries usually belong to what might be called an "expanding universe" (unless said series is said to take place in "some other dimension") - similar to many American pop culture heroes. Toei Ltd. also copied some American pop culture references into their shows like the creation of Japanese Spider-Man or using Robocop in the creation of Jiban and Janperson . Some Power Rangers fans probably still believe that Super Sentai is part of an "expanding universe". I may not like Power Rangers but there was a time I actually believed in a Super Sentai timeline. Hence, we have the guilty pleasure of trying to create a Super Sentai timeline no matter how absurd it gets . Doing so Crates more plotholes than Power Rangers BECAUSE Super Sentai has been around much...
