Super Sentai, Power Rangers, And Differences In The Zord Naming Scheme

Image
Last year, I wrote a random rant admitting that I'm okay with Power Rangers fans using THEIR terminologies . It's actually easier to talk about Super Sentai with a Power Rangers fan using terms like rangers (which is acceptable), morph over henshin (both are synonyms), and I'm okay if someone still calls Kamen Rider with its now discontinued international name Masked Rider . The term "Zord" is also used to refer to any mecha. However, Super Sentai uses the Japanese term Mecha instead.  The term Zord has been used in Power Rangers . I may not like Power Rangers but watching The Toys That Made Us is still enlightening. The international market has no one-size-fits-all arrangement. Different countries may require different types of localization. Power Rangers is STILL an adaptation based on the BUSINESS TERM localization. The term mecha wouldn't hit. Instead, it was said that the word "Zord" was derived from the word sword or from the title  Zoids . Zoi...

King-Ohger 23: Yes, Get Shugoddom's Giant Castle Zord Moving!

Image
This week's episode gets the Castle Zord moving! Okay, why I'm using some Power Rangers terminology even if I blatantly dislike it is because I feel King-Ohger is a celebratory season . 30 years of Mighty Morphin' means 30 years since Toei managed to get its bigger start in the Western market. This week manages to conclude the Shugoddom Castle as a giant Zord arc. When the Ultrazord will debut may also be sooner than you think. We see Kofuki who was first introduced during the King Racules mini-series . Speaking of Racules, I'm missing that idiot because he really has a lot of entertainment value. Kofuki was last seen unconscious and Himeno uses some healing spell. Wait, Himeno had that power? Did I miss something? Okay, it's all about trying to unlock the power of Castle Shugoddom. They find out some secret that it's not going to be that easy. What better way to awaken a Zord than a Zord? Gira begs the Shugods to help them awaken Castle Shugoddom's mecha fo...

Finally, Donbrothers' First Combined Megazord And My Thoughts On The Rather Long Intro Arc

Image
I wanted to go on a hiatus (or even eventually stop blogging about Super Sentai altogether). Now, it's time to look at what I might call a new type of mecha combination. It's really not enough that the other rangers become CGI-deformed people.  This is really one weird way to do the mecha... Previously, we saw the Donbrothers become CGI-deformed characters. Some even defy their sizes like how in the world did one's spandex (insert Dr. K's jokes here) get LONGER LEGS or how can one become a midget dog or a bulky gorilla? What I find even more logic-defying is how in the world do they become mecha versions of themselves? Instead of piloting the mecha - they BECOME the Mecha. Don Momotaro has also copied the technique to fight in another dimension like the Space Sheriff Trilogy heroes Gavan, Sharivan , and Shaider . I think Toei Ltd. discontinuing the Metal Hero franchise is all because of Kamen Rider's revival. Metal Hero may be discontinued (probably because Rob...

When The First Megazord Takes A Little Longer Before It Saw Combat

Image
I've been watching Donbrothers at an irregular pace so you may notice I no longer do episode reviews. I noticed that it's been eight episodes of Donbrothers and the first Megazord hasn't even combined it. It seems Don Momotaro is taking over the spot in the giant mecha battles in the past few episodes. Just note that I'm using the term Megazord even if the term wasn't applied to Super Sentai until Go-Busters when every mecha was called a Megazord. The term Megazord has been used in the Power Rangers fandom. I may not like Power Rangers but I'm still comfortable in calling the warriors "rangers" and mecha "zords". Back then, I haven't seen much of older Super Sentai so I didn't notice the trend that much. Super Sentai had its first Megazord but it was under construction until episode five when it first saw combat. I was probably too used to seeing the Megazord appear a little earlier since Chodenshi Bioman (which was pretty weird by...

Kiramager 29: Somebody's Back...

Image
Last week's Kiramager was the tears for a new Bandai merchandise . Now, we see the Bandai merchandise in action. Also, somebody we thought dead is back in a new form. Now, read on and see who's back. Last week was written by Kaori Kaneko and this week is written by Tete Inoue.  Last week's episode ends with the Projector Gomoryu in battle. The Kiramagers are lucky that the monster overheats so they retreat. This doesn't work out so well for Yodonna's devious plot. Meanwhile, a petrified figure of King Oradin is discovered. So like the queen, King Oradin is ALIVE? Well, Yodonna shows how much of a bitchs he can get with what she does. She shows Garza the petrified remains of King Oradin. The Kiramagers enter into the world of Atamald which is just an illusion. It turns out as the ideal place where both Earth and Crystalia are in peace. Think of Dekaranger's world where aliens and humans are aware of each other's existence. Meanwhile, some nightmare fuel is sh...

Ryusoulger 17: The Captured Strong Guy

Image
Well, I'd like to apologize for the now slowing down weekly reviews for this reason -- Overtime subs has been having delays in releasing the Ryusoulger subs. Also, I have been having some real-life issues going on. Now, it's time for a review that focuses on Mosarex. That's why I'm using the Jurassic World picture there! As we remember last week -- Gachileus bit the dust. Poor Creon thinketh that Wizeru has been gone. Surprise, Wizeru is still back! I guess he never saw Wizeru just simply run away. Now, on for the main scenario... There's a young child named Kentaro who wants to look for a rainbow. Canaro is initially uninterested until a cute girl appears. But looks can be deceiving, right? I have to admit I did laugh at the "undressing" scenario which turneth out to be Wizeru in disguise. The whole stunt alloweth him to use Ghost Ship Menasaur to capture the said creature. I wonder did Wizeru watch Jurassic World 2 before he showed up? ...

Ryusoulger Episode 16: The Sunken Sea Wish

Image
I guess it's only normal to feature water-featured episodes because it's time for Super Sentai's summer episodes. The history of the Ryusoul Tribe gets expanded into both land-dwellers and sea-dwellers though I doubt it there'd be air-dwellers. This episode is written by Ayuri Shimo -- the same person who wrote the episode relating to being careful about what thou wishest for . The start of the episode doth show Gachileus' uttermost cruelty. He considereth Creon to have been expended. Though Creon doth seem to have some potential as he's not easily destroyed. Gachileus shattereth Creon, he turns into slime then he assembles himself back. Meanwhile, the Ryusoulgers are with Oto at where they're currently residing in. So I wonder do the Ulshades well let the Ryusoulgers board for free or what? Do the Ryusoulgers even do regular work to pay rent? Just then Canaro showeth up and trieth to take his younger sister Oto back to where they came from. The...
