Should Super Sentai Dub, Sub or Adapt?

Image
It has crossed my mind just recently with Super Sentai (as well as Tokusatsu) for the foreign market. Before Zyuranger was adapted into Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Season One, Super Sentai was being dubbed into different languages- English, Filipino, French and Latin. To reduce the violence, some scenes deemed inappropriate (like gunshot wounds) were deleted without hiding the fact that the enemy died. The dubbing went until Jetman, which I believe was another choice for what Saban wanted to become Power Rangers. In the Philippines, they saw dubbed versions of Goranger, JAKQ, Goggle V (unfinished), Bioman, Maskman (unfinished), Turboranger (unfinished), Fiveman and the last was Jetman. After that the MMPR craze went, ignoring Super Sentai (which is a BAD idea, why not get both?). Then again, grab little at a time. Haim Saban was interested in dubbing Super Sentai if I'm not wrong. Rumors spread that he actually dubbed Bioman as an entire series but it clicked more w...

A Picture that Once Confused Many Older PR Fans

Image
When this picture leaked out to PR fans who didn't know much of Super Sentai and that MMPR was drawn some Sentai sources of Zyuranger, Dairanger and Kakuranger were confused, "I don't remember Fiveman and Jetman assisting the Power Rangers or wasn't the Thunder Megazord dismantled before the Shogun Megazord came as well as Dino Megazord." Actually it was until they discovered of the short TV special Super Sentai world that they knew that MMPR was NOT an original production by Saban but an adaptation with royalties to Toei, as Toei's means to target America because of cultural differences. Pre PR-Sentai Marks I See in Tommy in Power Rangers

Image
Although these rangers/characters didn't have any PR counterparts, I think they did however inspire the creation of Tommy in Power Rangers. When Tommy shifted from green ranger to white ranger at the same time usurped the red ranger's position as leader, it was kind of like in JAKQ when Big One arrived as an additional hero of the team of four and replaced the red ranger Spade Ace as the leader. I count Big One as the first white ranger. Tommy kind of got as cocky as he was. In fact, both characters are mascots of their own respective franchise despite the huge time lapse. I think Takeru of Maskman seems to have inspired Tommy in some way. Both are that devoted to karate and tend to get cocky at times. When Tommy became the red ranger in Power Rangers Zeo, I felt like he had a little of Takeru in him. Strangely the actor Ryosuke Kaizu who played Takeru appeared in episode one of Ohranger but sadly not the commander. Jason was nowhere near this guy. In fact, I felt like ...

Tommy's Four Sentai Counterparts

Image
I really can't help to think but Tommy from four seasons of Power Rangers has gotten redundant. In fact, I can't help but think of the fact that these four characters kind of form my own "dream Sentai" for Dice-O which I would put Riki/Red Turbo as the leader who I think was the only Sentai character kind of close to Tommy in personality or maybe Big One. By the way, I didn't include Kyosuke Jinnai because Tommy was later replaced by TJ and in Forever Red, TJ appeared alongside Tommy with different powers but he may be a good team leader for the Dice-O team and call it "Tommy Five". :-P The first character to be used for Tommy's powers was the late Burai of Zyuranger. However he was a more vicious bad-ass than Tommy ever was. Besides, I kind of find Tommy and Jason's battle to be just too random compared to Geki and Burai as estranged brothers. Sadly he died when his life force got all used up. The younger Burai returned in Dairanger as anoth...

Sentai Marks in Thuy Trang and Her Role as Trini Kwan

Image
I think while Zack Taylor was more of a reference to Battle Kenya while being a more original character, well Trini Kwan seems to blend in several past Sentai characters while having NONE of Boi's personality from Zyuranger whatsoever maybe due to gender differences. Here are some of those marks I can find. I think her first mark may be that she like Yuki Yajima (who sadly only appeared for nine episodes in Bioman) was chosen for having kick ass martial arts skills to play the part of Mika Koizumi. The character Trini Kwan was a gusty, aggressive lady with a love for nature. In the later part of the second season, she had salary disputes with Saban Entertainment just as Yuki Yajima had it with Japan Action Club, had enough and left the set. Both also had rather iconic fight scenes out of suit. Both actresses were rumored to have been fired. Another mark in Trini Kwan is the character Haruka from Maskman. There were times Trini Kwan was like less girlie in the show. Howev...

Filipinos, Super Sentai and Power Rangers

Image
Honestly speaking, Filipino fans (and I a current resident of the Philippines who is forced to watch non-subbed Sentai) have been having their dilemmas of "missing pieces" of their younger days. I agree. It's frustrating really. Ha ha. Here are some Sentai shown to Filipinos dubbed in the national language (edited to reduce on-screen violence without changing the story): Goggle V- Only up to episode 20. Boo hoo. I watched the finale on the Internet and found the final battle with Fuehrer Taboo really lame but it did wrap everything perfectly. However it did wrap up the story well. Bioman- Finished. It was shown in English. Some rumors say Saban dubbed Bioman. I think so because the pink ranger was named Kimberly. Maskman- Sadly only up to episode 50. It was a beautiful love story for some. My favorite had to be the not-so-practical Takeru/Red Mask dubbed as Michael Joe. Turboranger- Sadly only up to episode 31. I liked Turboranger's concept of te...
