Dengeki Sentai Changeman's 40th Anniversary: How The Series Shook What I Thought About "Power Rangers In Space" (Some Spoilers)

Image
There are times when comparing Power Rangers and Super Sentai can be apples and oranges. However, both shows tend to copy from each other and from American superhero fiction -- A LOT! I watched Denji Sentai Megaranger -- the source material for Power Rangers in Space . There's no doubt that Space saved Power Rangers from cancellation -- hence the possible why Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog was left hanging. Power Rangers gained traction and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy was conceived. I watched Megaranger without thinking too much about Space .  SPOILERS AHEAD! I. The heroes and their exploits However, the same couldn't be said about Dengeki Sentai Changeman . I heard the series was supposed to be named Cosmoman but the military theme was put. That's why there's the Shuttlebase as a Carrier Zord. However, the Changemen aren't trained to be astronauts but hardened soldiers. The first episode is pretty much Up to Eleven with the training scene. Commander Ibuki does extrem...

1975, 1985, 1995: When Rangers Were Militarily-Trained Rangers

Image
I couldn't come up with a good ramble. I had recent thoughts considering that I'm FREAKING AS OLD AS DENGEKI SENTAI CHANGEMAN . However, I've treated Super Sentai more like a side hobby like everything else in the entertainment world. I'm proud to say that I've actually watched a lot of the older entries and the newer ones. Yes, that's why I ask how many old shows have you tried watching. Not everyone can truly watch the older seasons and some older fans may drop Super Sentai for other stuff. Heck, I've been contemplating that for the nth time. However, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger and Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger were kiddie shows that don't ignite my Kiddie Show Sunday Spirit .  Anyway, let's define the word ranger. The word ranger usually means a keeper of the British royal park OR a body of organized armed men for law enforcement. Overtime, the term ranger has been popularized for Power Rangers . Super Sentai eventually kept using either ranger or the short...

Sentai Similarities: The Way Changeman's Ahames And Kiramager's Yodonna Get Introduced

Image
No matter how old an idea - somehow some of them tend to find their way into the modern age, right? It's just like no matter what age - innovation should always carry the 4Ds which are definition, discovery, development, and delivery. That is, innovation always has one thing in mind - it's not just a new idea but also making sure that the new ideas work and deliver good results. While watching Kiramager - I noticed that one old idea was suddenly fished way back 35 years ago namely Ahames from Changeman. Suddenly, the idea was somewhat modernized (though probably won't be as intense due to current censorship laws) with Yodonna in Changeman. Both of them are played by an attractive actress (though I wonder who Fukomi Kuroda is married to) and wear white wigs. Both of them carry a baton that can also double as a whip. Just because Hirohisa Soda hasn't been involved in Super Sentai that his ideas are gone. They have just been improvised over the years by writers such as Jun...

How Many Space-Themed Or Space-Related Toku From Toei Have You Tried Watching Aside From Ucchu Sentai Kyuranger?

Image
Kyuranger has ended, I enjoyed it a lot but I still feel like my head's still in space while Lupinranger vs. Patranger is enjoyable with its new concept. But I'd like to do a throwback challenge once more. After I did the Arsene Lupin challenge  then let's take the challenge to space shall we? So I'll give what I've seen and I hope you can give your own stand. I lost the Lupin challenge and I wonder if I've won this challenge. The Space Sheriff Trilogy would be where I'm most familiar with though I have barely saw Sharivan. Yup, I'm more familiar with Gavan and Shaider. Gavan was dubbed as Sky Ranger Gavan in the Philippines -- it was only years later did I discover that it was not Sky Ranger but Space Sheriff and that some of the guest actors were big time stars. I'd say Shaider is probably my least favorite. I didn't like it that much as a child and my mind hasn't changed about it as an adult. Strangely, I didn't like Solbrain as ...

Two Tsurugis That Sent "The Starry Sky's Message" Across Their Respective Universes

Image
This week's Kyuranger reminded me of Changeman's 21st episode. Okay, don't expect me to do Changeman episode reviews because I did a marathon on those shows. Without much ado, let's talk about the two Tsurugis that gave a message of hope across the Universe. Take note though that Tsurugi is Change Dragon's surname while Tsurugi is Phoenix Warrior's first name. Me: *Listens to the song "The Starry Sky's Message from Ucchu Keijii Gavan while typing this entry* Although the two broadcasts happened at different times in the two different shows and their respective episodes but we can't deny that a certain Tsurugi is involved in this broadcast. Both of the have their motive to raise to motivate others not to give up the fight for freedom. Star King Bazoo has conquered almost the whole Universe in Changeman. Don Armage has conquered the known Universe in Kyuranger. Both Tsurugis stop a broadcast done by the villains to give hope to the planets conqu...

Hiryu Tsurugi: The Amazing Dragon Soldier

Image
While watching Changeman, I thought of who my favorite would be. I thought I could relate more to Yuuma Oozora or to Shou Hayate but I ended up picking Hiryu Tsurugi. Yes, Hiryu and the actor Haruki Hamada together with the suit actor Kazuo Niibori (who I never knew until Akibaranger) do a good job portraying the character. So what's up with him as the leader of the Change team and how did he become my personal favorite? Just read and find out about this amazing guy. I could talk about how he may be a forerunner to Jetman's Ryu Tendo . Both characters are reliable leaders yet they have their own personal issues to deal with. He tends to put duty above feelings but there are times his feelings gets the best of him. This sort of clashes with Shou (who could be a forerunner to Gai Yuki in some way) though the conflict is more of how to run a mission. Such incidents were like how he chose to still believe in Sayaka Nagisa's anti-gravity belt invention or when he saw an amnesi...

Changeman: The Amazing World Defense Force

Image
I just finished Dengeki Sentai Changeman and added it to my list of Super Sentai series I've watched from start to end. I admit that I'm enjoying Kyuranger and I can't wait for tomorrow's episode. On the other hand, I've just watched more of Changeman with subs courtesy of  LordTranza33 . I had some grueling moments downloading it but I came out victorious in the end. So let's get started shall we? Warning! There are some spoilers ahead unless you're a spoiler addict like me! I remembered how often Shogo B'Stard praises this show. I see why he would. Although I've had some varying opinion differences with him and yes, we "clash" at certain moments since I like Timeranger, Hurricanger, and Boukenger when he doesn't. But I could agree with him with Changeman as a really innovative series. This was the time of Hirohisa Soda before he eventually met his downfall midway Turboranger and really burned out bad in Fiveman (but I still like ...

Taking Super Sentai And Power Rangers Into Space!

Image
While Grown Ups In Spandex is subbing Changeman and Flashman, I felt like the popularity of space-based science fiction like Star Trek, Star Wars and maybe some Marvel Comics series have inspired some characters. Then we had Power Rangers in Space and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy which took Power Rangers into space. Taking Super Sentai into space during the 80s...  Dengeki Sentai Changeman Some Super Sentai powers were taken from alien sources like Denziman and Bioman. Denziman was the start of space themes, Bioman was more on the science theme while having extraterrestrial technology. Changeman then had both space technology and military hardware at their disposal. Their mission is to stop Star King Bazoo from making Earth its next target. Bazoo has a "united alliance of evil" from different planets whom he rules over with an iron fist. The Changemen's severe training soon awakened the Earth Force. The five survivors of the Gozma's initial attack managed...

Pre-Zyuranger Super Sentai Character Concepts I Wish Were Copied Into Power Rangers

Image
As part of the tribute that Zyuohger is the 40th Super Sentai series (though each decade of Super Sentai gets some major changes), I thought these characters or at least their designs or concepts could've been used into later seasons of Power Rangers. Maybe they could have tried to create a suit for Emperor Grumm based on Fuehrer Hell Saturn instead of Vulgar from the Dekaranger movie. Both were controlled by the "Magnificence" as the literal brain behind their organizations. Of course, keep Omni as it is due to being the improved version of the Black Sun God in Sun Vulcan. I wish Mora's grown-up form could have used a modified version of Amazon Killer for Power Rangers SPD.

Rambling On Grown Ups In Spandex Are Now Subbing Changeman And Flashman!

Image
After the mission of completing the Bioman subs for the episodes (got to wait for the special feature), Grown Ups In Spandex  has now finished two classic 80s series. After watching some of them raw and some incomplete subs (hopefully, they will be done), the first episodes have been released. Sidenote, I still want to see Janperson fully subbed soon enough.  I have seen some raw episodes of these shows or have read some synopsis but as I learned it the hard way, it is not enough, I must watch these shows. Both of these shows happened the Takeyuki Suzuki era  (which I believe influenced both Super Sentai and Power Rangers in one way or another) with Hirohisa Soda as the head writer.  I have seen some episodes of Changeman but a lot of them are left unsubbed. After rewatching the first episode subbed, I couldn't still forget the cool military training scene, the "devilish commander" Ibuki and that they must defend the Earth from Gozma's incoming invasion....

Planet Destroying Villain Factions in Super Sentai

Image
Super Sentai had factions that destroyed planets namely... Great Star League Gozma The Great Star League Gozma from Dengeki Sentai Changeman were destroying planets. Its ruler Bazoo had a habit of conquering planets while keeping some people at his command. He has Giluke as his captain from the Planet Girath, Ahames was from the planet Amazo, Shiima was from Planet Amanga, Gator was from Planet Navi and Booba was a space pirate. Bazoo would threaten his followers with destruction of their home planets if he failed them. Silver Imperial Army Zone Silver Imperial Army Zone from Chikyu Sentai Fiveman had the same trend as Great Star League Gozma. Their ruler Empress Meadow ordered them to conquer one planet after the other. Many planets were declared dead as they conquered one world after the other. Sidon was one of the many planets they destroyed. During that time, Chevalier had also led in the conquest of the 999 planets that Zone had destroyed. If the 1,000th planet were dest...
