Why Super Sentai VS. Movies Are MEANT To Be NON-CANON

Image
As I'm currently enjoying No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger (but again, don't expect me to make episode reviews any longer) -- I thought about the Megazord Graveyard at the beginning. The first Super Sentai series that gathered all the previous Super Sentai together was Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger . Gokaiger probably started the whole debate about whether or not the  Super Sentai entries belong to a timeline or not. In my case, it's more of a GUILTY PLEASURE even when I realize that, unlike Power Rangers -- there's NO SUPER SENTAI TIMELINE !  Events in Super Sentai would dictate that most Super Sentai series are self-contained. Kikou Sentai Zenkaiger was the one that specified that MOST SUPER SENTAI SERIES WERE SELF-CONTAINED! It might be because I used to like Power Rangers -- until I realized that it's not my cup of tea. One thing I realized was that I'm such a nitpicker. I had the bad habit of nitpicking Dragon Ball Z films . What I never thought of before was that Supe...

Super Sentai VS. Movies, Power Rangers' Crossover Episodes And Possible Narrative Impacts

Image
Super Sentai has its legacy and it's on its 50th birthday for Himitsu Sentai Goranger . So far, there may be no plans yet for the 50th entry of the series. I like ot nitpick a lot of stuff. I may not like Power Rangers,  but I've had a nasty habit of criticizing the Super Sentai VS. Movies for their lack of canonicity. I nitpicked the Super Hero Taisen games to the point I could no longer enjoy it. I had a huge shock when I realized that a lot of the Dragon Ball movies couldn't fit in. I also nitpicked the Dragon Ball movie called  Mystical Adventure -- which had Chiaotzu as a young emperor and Tien KILLING Master Shen with a Kikoho. The Dragon Ball Z movies followed, and I realized that most of them couldn't be canon. That's why I wrote an entry comparing the Dragon Ball Z movies to the Super Sentai crossover movies . However, the same couldn't be said for Power Rangers . Power Rangers chose to deliberately have that "solid continuity" -- except for...

Confession: Why I Don't Regret Pausing On Newer Super Sentai, To Watch Older Super Sentai (That I Haven't Watched Yet)

Image
Today is Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers' 32nd anniversary. This year is also when Himitsu Sentai Goranger turned 50 years old last April 2025. Feeling old? I had a rollercoaster of emotions after Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger ended. Gokaiger felt like a yearlong finale. This year's Gozyuger feels like a yearlong finale. Gokaiger, more so ,  since it managed to get as many alumni to guest star as possible. It was almost a farewell party. However, Super Sentai tends to have that "reboot treatment" , such as when Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters came after Gokaiger . I was too afraid to admit that I was a Go-Busters fan . I ended up rewatching Go-Busters after I finished Power Rangers Beast Morphers . It was also hard for me to watch more Super Sentai after Go-Busters . It doesn't help I was riding on fan opinions. For instance, I remember Shougo B'Stard actually hitting Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger . I felt like, "Okay, maybe I need to spare myself from the disappointmen...

Ohranger VS. Kakuranger: Setting The Trend For Super Sentai VS. Films And How They're Written WITHOUT CANON In Mind

Image
Super Sentai and Power Rangers differ in a lot of things. There's always the cultural difference. It doesn't matter how much I dislike Power Rangers -- I understand that the show had to exist due to CULTURAL DIFFERENCE. Calling Power Rangers an "act of cultural erasure" or "ruined the precious material" is ABSURD. Choriki Sentai Ohranger started another almost yearly tradition -- the Super Sentai VS. Movies  tradition. However, one might notice the difference between how Super Sentai and Power Rangers handle crossovers . Super Sentai writes crossover films WITHOUT canon in mind. Power Rangers tries to put most of its entries into a singular timeline. However, some Power Rangers shows are self-contained, such as Power Rangers RPM and Power Rangers Dino Charge .  Choriki Sentai Ohranger had a crossover movie with Ninja Sentai Kakuranger on March 5, 1996, directly on home video. The short film featured a team-up between the Ohrangers and the Kakurangers. It w...

Ohranger's Final Bosses: Kaiser Buldont And Maruchiwa (Spoilers)

Image
Bomber the Great was nothing more than a PLOT DEVICE. Bomber the Great only had seven episodes -- only to be a set-up device for Prince Buldont to become Kaiser Buldont. What amuses me more often is how the Baranoia Royfal Family showed detest for human emotions. However, Emperor Bacchushund showed that he was CAPABLE OF LOVE for both his wife and son. Bacchushund has a PERMANENT SHUTDOWN compared to King Mondo in Power Rangers Zeo . Buldont becomes Kaiser Buldont -- he's forced grown and he marries his cousin Maruchiwa. It gets even funnier to think these robots are operating LIKE HUMANS! Added is the royal incest -- something that screwed up many royal families into their own demise! Bomber the Great was nowhere near as great as Bio Hunter Silver from Chodenshi Bioman . Silver proved to be a REALLY CREDIBLE THREAT that worked his way to the finale. Rewatching some Bioman episodes made me say Bomber the Great was a plot device. Bio Hunter Silver was a robot programmed to destroy ...

Bomber The Great VS. Louie Kaboom Plot Comparison (Spoilers)

Image
It's no secret that I find Choriki Sentai Ohranger to be a messy toy commercial. Come on, no one can deny that throwing one Megazord after the other can derail the plot ! It's pretty much overworking the marketing department (and writing too), like what happened with the Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z . Now, as messy as Ohranger was, I still find it more watchable than Power Rangers Zeo . Zeo tried to continue where Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers  Season 3 left off! I'm still SOURED UP until now over the Dear John letter that was presented in Zeo ! Now, I'd like to write a bit of a rant on Louie Kaboom (the Zeo  counterpart) and Bomber the Great! One of the reasons why I don't like Power Rangers is how often people have to watch previous entries just to understand another entry. Power Rangers Turbo ended with a cliffhanger, while Gekisou Sentai Carranger gave a proper conclusion. I have to watch Turbo to understand Power Rangers in Space ? Not even Tokyu Shirei Solbra...
