Crazy Nostalgic Post: My Nightmare In Spandex Last 2013...

It's really a crude joke that I'm using Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th on this post. However, I feel that this crude joke might address my ILL FEELINGS. It's known (by now) that I don't like Power Rangers. It's also known (by now) that I dislike certain Super Sentai seasons when they're just bad for me. I can go ahead and blab at how much I think Super Sentai is better than the US-licensed localization (personal preference ONLY) then blab that some of its entries are PLAIN HORRID. I'd recall 2013 was indeed that spandex nightmare. It's two shows that really showed what I'd call extra moments of cringe. Sure, one of them is better than the other but I've got the freedom to dump them both.

That huge anniversary blunder that's Power Rangers Megaforce

If there's any Power Rangers season that defines what dragged it down - THIS IS IT! The return of Haim Saban simply relied on Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers nostalgia than seeking new audiences. Power Rangers Samurai was a prime example of it. The show had some generous amounts of eye candy for both genders. However, it's really a big TOTAL MESS that just tries to be "the second coming of Mighty Morphin'" instead of focusing on real revival. Yeah, Saban's stuck with the Krusty Krab mindset and Toei Ltd. doesn't seem to mind. That's as long as Saban pays cold hard cash huh?

I did watch the first half and am so glad I DROPPED IT. Sure, I did watch it for the girls (big blunder) then saw it's practically a pointless mess. Almost every piece of it forces the cast members to bend to idiotic lengths. I felt almost nothing in the show could deliver the story that was needed. There's a few differences here and there. However, the Mighty Morphin' nostalgia hits like it's still 1993 when it's already 2013 at that time. I could say even Emma's Kimberly joke was too out-of-place. The show just had no idea what it wanted to do. Like WTF.

I could say that the cast isn't the real problem. Still, I want to say that Andrew Gray must've really cried for real (during the rather bad scene of freeing Robo Knight) because of how bad the show is. Though, I think Yudai Chiba's acting in that original scene wasn't any better either. It's just that Yudai's character of Alata was still given more room to develop. Troy was just that prop and nothing more for the whole anniversary. I really understand why Troy is considered to be one of the worst red rangers ever.

I'd say Megaforce left a REALLY HUGE trauma in my head even when I skipped SEVERAL EPISODES then watched the dumb finale. I even had to refer to other shows. It's no debate that Denji Sentai Megaranger is truly mega over this show. If you want eye candy and a good show then watch Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Then why not rewatch Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger while at it? Getting rid of his trauma took three shows to recover from it. Yes, that's how badly I think of this show.

The third dinosaur-themed Super Sentai was still a disaster for me

I don't want to comment too much about Power Rangers Dino Charge since most of my rage will still hit KYORYUGER. One could argue that both Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger and Dino Charge have really impressive main-cast fight scenes one way or another. One could keep saying how so and so from both shows beat the bad guys. However, my own personal assessment of Kyoryuger is still not good. Sure, it's better written than Megaforce. However, I feel that the show in itself just lacks the flavor of what the predecessors had. Watching both Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger makes me cringe.

My liking an older show better doesn't mean I'm against innovation. It's more about how the story was written or if it fits with my PERSONAL TASTE. I watched Zyuranger and find it to be better than Mighty Morphin' IMHO, especially with how it had a definite finale. I watched Abaranger and think that the show has had better use of multi-gattai dinosaurs, better-looking gear, and more menacing villains for a show that came after the great censorship. I feel the characters of both Zyuranger and Abaranger are far better than Kyoryuger could be.

I think my problem is how hyper Kyoryuger can be. Maybe, I can talk about how I think Daigo Kiryu steals that attention. Sure, Lucky from Ucchu Sentai Kyuranger tends to get that much focus. However, the more Kyuranger progresses, the more the show starts to focus on teamwork. Kyuranger's finale emphasizes teamwork when all of them beat Don Armage. Spoilers: Daigo defeats the main villain Deboth HIMSELF. That totally just defeats the meaning of teamwork. I'm really not too happy with how Kyoryuger was. I did watch it from start to end and it was just DISAPPOINTING IMHO.

I'd also think about that magnificently messy crossover it had with Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters. Having dinosaurs the third time around was almost as bad as Mighty Morphin' nostalgia. I guess it wasn't enough for Emma to throw a Kimberly joke. We even have a pink ranger named AMY. 2003 was the 10th anniversary of Mighty Morphin' and 2013 would be the 20th anniversary. The crossover movie wasn't canon though since dinosaurs died too differently in Kyoryuger. Still, I felt that having a third dinosaur show was a bore. I'll still beat Kyoryuger up because I think Abaranger has been that superior series.

I think the trauma left by this show isn't too severe. I was still able to finish it. However, I'll never deny that I got numb with Super Sentai thanks to this show. I even almost considered quitting the franchise. I could now enjoy Ressha Sentai ToQGer after a few years. However, this show is one of those I'd consider a show that makes dinosaurs glad they're no longer with. I still say ToQGer can be a breath of fresh air after this awful show. ToQGer has better characters even if Yasuko Kobayashi was in a burnout. ToQGer also has a following and deserves better love.

Pretty much I'm going to say that Megaforce further fed my dislike for Power Rangers. Kyoryuger almost made me leave Super Sentai. It was a good thing that Kamen Rider Gaim came to the rescue late 2013 after Kamen Rider Wizard was just plain awful.

  1. Please watch KR Dragon Knight. Now, or for the next year, which is it's 15th anniversary.
