Them Blue Rangers Affiliated With Water

I'll admit, every time I see the color blue, it reminds me of water. After all, don't you hear of the term "the blue ocean"? Toei had a trend for some time of having blue rangers getting involved with water either as power or most of the time, profession. The whole idea wonderfully made it into Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue with Chad Lee. Now moving on...

Kinya Samejina/Vul Shark is an EDS Naval Officer. Haven't seen much of Sun Vulcan to comment on this guy.

Yousuke Shima (NOT SHIINA, who is Hurricane Red) is a swimmer and surfer. His dream is to create artificial gills for divers. Cool to see how his mermaid-related episode was somehow used in Lightspeed Rescue which I feel was an improvement from an idea that seemed sunk into the bottom of the ocean during the 80s.

No doubt that Ryuta Nanbara/Blue Three still my favorite Bioman from nine years old to thirty years old. In the beginning of the episode, he was recruited while he was jet-skiing. His skills underwater made him a pretty nimble character.

Although not affiliated with water, Megumi Misaki/Blue Dolphin's animal motif is a dolphin. Her mecha the Live Dolphin was also an underwater vehicle which had flight abilities. She has one episode where she was involved in a diving episode, where she met Dr. Kemp who was trying to evolve into a more powerful form.

Youhei Hama/Blue Turbo was a swimmer and high jumper.

Saizo/Ninja Blue controls the element of water. A pretty hammy fellow if you ask me.

With Gingaman being connected to nature itself, it's only natural Gouki/Ginga Blue being a blue ranger controls water. Considering he's the strongest member of his team, I guess his might is supposed to display the powerful tide of water. Even in his opening, he splashes a great amount of water on the screen.

Gaoranger starts off a new era of Super Sentai while it's an anniversary season at the same time. Kai Samezu/Gao Blue himself has the shark motif. Now where did we get that? Sun Vulcan! I felt like that watching him grow was fun and working at a surf shop matched him well. I guess the Gao Giraffe chose him because he literally fished it out of the water.

I'll admit, I do like Nao Nagasawa's action scenes and she's badass, I thought she should have returned as a villain in other Super Sentai seasons like I think she could have been used as as human guise for a monster of the week or a regular villain causing havoc to the other heroes, pretty much like Sayoko Hagiwara (Rei Tachibana's actress) acting as Ley Nefel in Flashman. I even thought she might have done a splendid performance as Escape in Go-Busters. As for the character Nanami Nono/Hurricane Blue, I just thought that she's not as well-written as Megumi/Blue Dolphin.

Well this picture tells you I've dropped Magiranger after I finished it, right? Urara herself tends to come out as a team mom gone wrong IMO. I couldn't really bear anyone in Magiranger after several episodes plus finishing it was a chore for me. Better watch more of GogoFive and Fiveman for a better family Super Sentai instead. 'Nuff said. The other female blues were so much better than her.

Ryunosuke Ikenami/Shinken Blue is really ham and I mean, he was "annoying" to his teammates but he ends up making me laugh for a lot of his turn. His helmet's calligraphy means water which is too typical with his color blue. While he's not cool-headed, he shares one trait with water namely being unstable. He does get mood swings every now and then.

Hyde/Gosei Blue the eldest of the Goseigers and sole member of the Seaick tribe. He lost his teammate Magis long time ago. I always felt like that he was not as good as Hoji as a blue who serves as a de-facto leader. I guess that picture above shows how I feel towards Goseiger, huh?

  1. Actually, Shima is indeed Dyna Blue's family name, while Shiina (two "I's") is Hurricane Red's family name. "Shima" is Japanese for "island", which makes sense, since an island is in water.

  2. Alata is the name for Gosei Red, and Gosei Blue's name is Hyde.

  3. Not sure if Kakuranger really counts as one of the elemental seasons.

  4. Nice post, you've included a few Blues who even I'll sort of forget are water-related (like Ginga Blue).
