Strange Coincidence: "Home Along Da Riles" Parodied "Power Rangers" While Goranger's 20th Anniversary Was Nearing
Maya Imamori's half-Filipino heritage (mother side, though she might have Chinese blood running in her veins) can trigger me. However, I assumed that either Rin Takanashi or Kazusa Okuyama (both pink rangers) were born from Filipino mothers in 2009 and 2018. This reminds me of some strange, random throwback I had from my childhood. For some reason, Power Rangers didn't reach the Philippines until 1995 instead of later in 1994. Were there some issues in logistics or what? Not all Power Rangers seasons even air in the Philippines. As per marketing decision -- Power Rangers was put into the Philippines instead of Super Sentai -- presumably due to the Philippines' status as a FORMER AMERICAN COLONY. I don't like Power Rangers BUT I refuse to blame the franchise as to why Super Sentai is no longer aired in D*MN AWFUL F***ING BORING TAGALOG DUBS! A parody seems to be always due whenever something gets famous -- such as was the case when Home Along Da Riles (Home Along the Rails) created the one-shot Powder Rangers parody. In fact, the Cosme Kids became the most DISORGANIZED team of superheroes -- a stark contrast to how well-organized superhero teams are supposed to be!
The parody had some purposely made ugly props. Filipinos who grew up in the 1990s may remember the late Rodolfo Quizon (Dolphy), the late Pablito Sarmiento (Babalu), and the late Bernardo C. Bernardo (yes, that's his real name). Home Along Da Riles also makes me recall I used to have a typical childhood admiration of Claudine Barretto's beauty. It's the same way that I watched Mighty Morphin' because Kimberly was very pretty. I couldn't remember the roles of the Kosme kids and their father, Kevin Kosme. Aling Azon is the sister-in-law (and love interest) of the widowed Kevin. The Powder Rangers episode had a lot of crazy stuff going on. Watching the episode on Daily Motion (hopefully, it will be available on ABiaS-CBN's YouTube channel) was a good laugh trip.
The episode addressed one thing -- missing an episode can be QUITE A BUMMER. Those were the times when I quarreled with my parents whenever I missed an episode of any 1990s show. I could remember going to the barber on a Saturday morning. I remember screaming a lot when I missed an episode of my Old Shame favorite cartoon, Conan the Adventurer. Kevin was fixing the TV while the Kosme Kids were watching Mighty Morphin'. Kevin may be that typical boomer though Dolphy was born in 1928. Seeing the opening scene was just a trip back. It also reminds me of the No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger episode that goes back to the Showa Era.
The episode was full of crazy humor. Cita Astals played a Rita Repulsa parody -- presumably due to the fact Cita rhymes with RITA. Babalu and Bernardo played the brainless minions. It was truly funny to have Babalu act as Mamang Saurus -- who looks more like a Kamen Rider Kaijin while Bernardo dressed up in a poor imitation of King Sphinx. Parody Rita was locked in a water drum and was looking for GORDON. The villains are even dumber than usual. Babalu's rampage was laughably stupid -- presumably because none of the cast members did action roles. Babalu asking Cita for public transporation fee (called pamasahe in Tagalog) was just funny. Spoiler alert: It was just ALL a dream presumably born out of disappointment. Yes, I've had crazy dreams too whenever I pouted about missing my favorite kiddie show!
Himitsu Sentai Goranger was aired in the Philippines in 1978 as Star Rangers. It's a HORRIBLE English dub (best FOREVER LOST) -- the same reason why I no longer want to rewatch the Chodenshi Bioman dub. It was aired during the Marcos Empire (which was presidential on paper, more like an empire in practice). Some may remember that Chodenshi Machine Voltes V was banned under the imperial decree of Emperor Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.. However, Goranger was actually aired in Japan back on April 5, 1975. That would mean Mighty Morphin' entered into the Philippines on Goranger's 20th year. The Power Rangers (2017) movie (which is really a borefest IMHO and it's just Super Hero Taisen on a diet, both terrible films) was on Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger's 25th anniversary. Zyuranger was the source material. Yup, some Filipinos who were 1990s children might even remember how Japanese toys got sold as Power Rangers toys. Strangely, 1978 was also a vacuum since there was no Sentai show in 1978. The Super Sentai series was introduced with Battle Fever J. The first two entries were later included and officially canonized in... 1995!
Take note that I only discovered such stuff in the 2000s. The Internet was still a luxury back in the 2000s. I was stuck with an old PC, and boomer parents didn't think too much about updating. I feel everything is just a coincidence. It was also back then when I realized (but not really surprised) that the Voltron franchise was based on Hyajakuu Golion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV -- two unrelated shows! I wasn't surprised to learn of Zyuranger since I made the remark, "Baraba's mother looks like Rita Repulsa!" Yup, Baraba's mother IS Rita Repulsa as the late Soga Machiko's footage was used. I felt I missed the hint back when VR Troopers Season 2 used footage from Uchu Keiji Shaider. But I wasn't surprised to find out about Chojinki Metalder, too. What still caught me by surprise is how Toei actually had Marvel's permission to use Spider-Man for a Toku series -- OF THE SAME NAME. Fortunately, Toei would choose to get inspired by American superheroes and add their ideas -- like what they did with Robocop when creating Kidou Keiji Jiban and Tokosou Robo Janperson. Signalman in Gekisou Sentai Carranger also references Robocop in some way -- he's also a FAMILY MAN like Alex Murphy!
A strange imagination... could this episode be referenced in a short arc in Gozyuger?
Tega Sword sounds a lot like Megazord. The word Zord was derived from Sword. The Megazord Graveyard had Tega Sword on top of it. I'm still okay with using some Power Rangers terminology while discussing Super Sentai -- even if I've grown to dislike the localization. Yes, we're in a free market, and there are CHOICES in the free market. Watching Daizyujin as the first Megazord to come out of that graveyard was something. After all, Daizyujin's footage was used for the Dino Megazord in Mighty Morphin' -- as the show spliced in Zyuranger footage.
Hiroshi Miyauchi is currently 77 years old, going 78 years old. Hiroshi played four different characters namely Aoranger, Kamen Rider V3, Big One, and Zubat. Hiroshi would later play Chief Miura in Choriki Sentai Ohranger -- a show that also aired in 1995! I compared Hiroshi's face to both father and son Dolphy and Eric Quizon. I heard Dolphy is part-Chinese too. I can only imagine if Toei decides to somehow poke fun at the Powder Rangers episode. I could imagine Hiroshi acting as a character named GORDON -- the senile overseer of the Megazord Graveyard. I couldn't forget making fun of Barza from Zyuranger -- calling him a senile old man. Burai's introductory arc just showed Barza could be senile -- trying to stop a CHILD with grenades and machine guns like a Looney Tunes. However, elves apparently don't get killed when you hit them with what would normally injure humans. I can imagine Gordon being a greater scope character of sorts -- one involved in trying to regain balance after the Universe War.
Episode 11 featured a Universe Warrior known as Kawashima. What made me laugh is that actor Catcher Nakasazawa looks like actor NINO MUHLACH (who's 53 years old now). Catcher is currently 34 years old. The casting is most likely coincidental.
Home Along Da Riles had a store known as Mang Tomas. Mang Tomas ran a general goods store. Oh, speaking of which, Gordon told the chosen warriors to BUY BATTERIES at Mang Tomas' store. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a shop called Tomas Oyaji. Mang is a shortcut for manong -- the Tagalog word used to address an elderly male. I'm just laughing, thinking about the possibilities.
Give that Home Along Da Riles was simply another sitcom -- I doubt it that the episode would be referenced in Gozyuger. However, Mayu's mother may have watched Home Along Da Riles growing up. Who knows what crazy stuff can happen!
