When Super Sentai "Adapts" General Sakimori Miwa From Daimos (Spoilers)

Image
With Daimos having its 45th anniversary - I felt like writing this article. I guess I never bothered to observe how the defunct Super Robot anime still influences Tokusatsu. Sure, we aren't going to see any more of those giant robots since Super Sentai took the spot. It's like how Power Rangers ends up overshadowing the Voltron franchise - both based on a Toei license. I guess World Event Productions (WEP) didn't stand a chance when Haim Saban got his turn with a Toei license. Some shows may be quite old but it doesn't mean they don't deserve a revisit. One character from Daimos would be an interesting revisit. It's the concept of that Stupid Evil bigot named General Sakimori Miwa. Yes, that Baam-hating general who'd do anything to get rid of them AND take the credit for himself. If I'm not wrong, the last Super Robot Anime that Toei had was Dairugger XV . Yes, that very show became the source material of the unpopular Vehicle Voltron cartoon. I guess ...

Toei's Defunct Super Robot Genre And How Super Sentai Became Its Replacement

Image
Here's a classic illustratin by Andrew Leta. I remembered reading an article from Henshin Grid about Voltron and Power Rangers . Before Haim Saban localized Japanese content - there was also World Event Productions (WEP) that remade both Beast King Golion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV into the two Voltron series. In Japan, both series weren't linked together as Golion happened in 1999 when the Earth was destroyed in a nuclear war. Dairugger XV happened in 2200 A.D. and the Earth was still intact complete with the Galaxy Alliance. Both shows were in 1981 and 1982. I suspect that Golion was created to celebrate Combattler V's fifth anniversary   and Dairugger XV   to celebrate Voltes V's fifth anniversary. Just think about how the team formation of Combattler V was very similar with Golion . Before that, they also had the team formation of Tatsunuko's  Science Ninja Team Gatchaman where Super Sentai would blatantly follow them . The Gatchaman team never used a gian...

King-Ohger 19: The Gathering Of The Sovereigns

Image
This has to be one weird title, is it? Rather than write the actual title which is "Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger" - I felt the need to write a title "more fitting". It's a very strange way to title an episode after the show's title. This week's episode features the development that was needed after Gira's faked death. We also get to see how Racules might be more of a Stupid Evil type of Evil Overlord.  Racules should've known better than to take advantage of Jeramie's desire. So far, we haven't met more good Bugnaroks aside from Jeramie's unnamed mother and Gemojim. Racules is now forced to announce as a puppet king. Oh boy, I guess Racules never saw that coming or his overconfidence gets the best of him. Desnarak VIII does show some contingency planning. Sure, Desnarak VIII hasn't had much of a victory either but this episode shows why he's not to be underestimated.  Later, Yanma and Jeramie escape much to the chagrin of the nu...

Super Sentai, Power Rangers, And Battlizer Usage

Image
This week's episode of Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger really brought in the Royal Battlizer. It wasn't just what I'd call an improved Corona Aurora from Power Rangers Operation Overdrive . It's also that said crown formed a Battlizer that both Gira and Racules were able to use. With King-Ohger as a possible celebratory season - it seems that it's a show with several shows in mind. It's time to look at how Super Sentai and the localization called  Power Rangers have used the Battlizer concept for some time.  The pre-Zyuranger era's introduction of Battlizers I can understand if some Super Sentai seasons do get less appreciation. Would anybody want to sit through 84 episodes of Himitsu Sentai Goranger ? Would anybody want to sit through what might be considered the cheesier days? Several experiments were done and most of them aged badly as flawed prototypes or became a staple item. Kagaku Sentai Dynaman had the Dyna Tector which was an experimental concept. Ryu H...

King-Ohger 18: The Founder's Crown

Image
This week's episode of King-Ohger starts with Gira's return. Yes, Gira has returned to the spotlight and it's nice to have him back. This week's plot almost reminds me of that plot device from Power Rangers Operation Overdrive . I gave the show a second opinion of a show that I just hated too much based on some Bandwagon effect. I think the Corona Aurora could've been a good plot IF it wasn't for that lousy schedule by Disney. It seems that the Corona Aurora is about to redeem itself here. It's because this episode is about a magic crown endowed with powers.   The scenario has Gira facing off Racules and Daigorg. Racules does get surprised to learn that Gira's still alive. This is an uneasy alliance between the self-entitled idiot Racules AND the Bugnarok. Gira can't stand it any longer. Racules reveals another ancient artifact of Shugoddom. It's called the Founder's Crown. Okay, I was thinking about the possibility that the crown may have so...
