The Super Sentai franchise really had a fair share of memorable heroes. Meanwhile, there are just some villains that we either love to hate or just boosted the show's ratings. I got the idea from CBR.com's article on Power Rangers villains that stole the show. Here are some villains I believe stole the show from heroes AND the default villains. These may also include my personal opinion so I could be wrong to a certain extent. Here they are and some spoilers ahead...
Black Cross Fuehrer
Like Lord Zedd in Mighty Morphin' - it seems the Black Cross Fuehrer is one of the most beloved villains ever. Sure, not everyone will be watching Goranger and it may be underappreciated due to how old it is or how unusually long it was (84 episodes). Heck, I even dropped Goranger while watching some of the more important episodes including the finale. Heck, this guy would be the Emperor of All Evil in many ways. If Super Sentai had a non-canon game similar to Power Rangers Super Legends - this guy would return in an attempt to rewrite history!
How does this guy fare? Well, Black Cross Fuehrer had his generals. However, this guy stands out as the genuine threat of the Goranger series. The guy even had crossover returns such as in the Gokaiger 199 Movie and in the really stupid Super Hero Taisen movie. I'm just glad though he didn't return as a guest star in Ryusoulger like Lord Zedd did in Dino Fury. Heck, Lord Zedd is even said to become the antagonist for Cosmic Fury.
\
Iron Claw
JAKQ is probably one series that's totally underrated or underappreciated. 35 episodes only? I guess some Power Rangers fans who exited the fandom may have been surprised or what? Then again some Power Rangers fans probably prefer anything after Timeranger better. This guy was acted by the legendary actor Masashi Ishibashi. Heck, Iron Claw even usurped his boss Shine (what a stupid name) for the finale. Talk about crazy!
Queen Hedrian
Before the late Soga Machiko donned the familiar Rita Repulsa attire - we had her as Queen Hedrian as a start-up role. Years later, she was also going to become Queen PANDORA all before she became Witch Bandora (Rita). Machiko's still beloved even after she left the world so soon in 2006. Yeah, cancer really sucks. She was practically old enough to be my grandmother too. She got so popular that she was eventually carried over to Sun Vulcan. Sun Vulcan was a rare case where a show was somewhat of a direct sequel. Most Super Sentai series are self-contained except for a few series.
Black Knight (also Megiddo)
I think Megiddo's alter-ego deserves a lot of love. Before, Megiddo was a generic thug who practically fit in the Michael Bay tropes. Megiddo supposedly disappeared and a cool new villain that trolled both the heroes and the villains appeared. This is Black Knight who is actually Megiddo without his tails. How cool is this guy? Black Knight was setting things up like giving Emperor Aton's sword to the Dynamen.
Black Knight also later assists his most hated nemesis Zenobia. Zenobia was the very person responsible for Megiddo's loss of tails. It was at the cave where Megiddo discovered that having a tenth tail means instant death. Black Knight purposely allowed Zenobia to get a tenth tail to get his revenge. Black Knight even defeated his own father Emperor Aton. Emperor Aton was SO PROUD of his son's betrayal. WTF!
Doctor Man
Born Hideo Kageyama - Doctor Man was well, once a man. Doctor Man is practically a Boomerang Bigot since he hates humanity while being formerly human. He started his own experiments to make himself the world's greatest genius. His backstory scared me senseless since I too once wanted to become the world's greatest genius and suffered frustrations as a result. I'm just glad I never had his machine or I'd be an old man too soon.
What makes this guy steal the show? I think he's the only one in New Empire Gear with the most personality. Mason is a generic thug. Farrah didn't use much espionage later on. Monster was still a funny idiot though. Doctor Man? He ran the show, waved his silver cape, and practically said it right, "I alone am the New Empire Gear!" in the finale arc. Later on, Doctor Man even reinvented himself into a complete cyborg. The new look was just so cool.
The presence of the late Munemaru Koda is another. Koda was also a badass martial artist as evidenced in Kamen Rider Super-1. Doctor Man's backstory as a human also reveals his inner conflict. Doctor Man created Prince because he can't find his son. Later, Doctor Man reprogrammed Prince as nothing more than a battle android. Doctor Man has a conflict with his son Shuichi Kageyama and his former friend Dr. Shinichiro Gou. Talk about deep!
Bio Hunter Silver
Another really serious threat as he's the SILVER BULLET of the Anti-Bio Alliance. Get it? Silver appeared in search of his missing mecha Balzion - the anti-thesis of the Bio Robo. Balzion shows the full destructive capacity of the Anti-Bio Particles - the same energy that killed Mika Koizumi way back in episode 10. This guy had he worried a lot because of that! Peebo even mentions that the Bio Buster gun has a deadlier accuracy than the Bio Killer Gun.
What makes this guy a show stealer? Well, he is a threat to both the Biomen and Gear. He made quick work of the Mechaclones. He's immune to the weapons from both sides. The finale really had him on focus until the second to the last episode. Both Zyuoh and Mettlzer were worn out by his repeated use of Anti-Bio Particle laser shots. Zyuoh and Mettlzer died from the Super Electron because they were in really bad battle condition. Heck, you can thank Silver that both Farrah and Mason bit the dust. The bad guys were doing the dirty work.
Later on, Silver returned in the non-canon Super Hero Taisen. Silver's non-canon appearance had him killing Kamen Riders. I even wanted to joke someone from the Philippines reprogrammed him to do so. After all, Kamen Rider is still showing in the Philippines but not Super Sentai. I can't be sure if Toei Ltd.'s just being a douche in that regard. XP
Queen Ahames of Amazo
Changeman practically has a great cast of characters. I disagree with Kaiju No Kami's negative assessment of Star King Bazoo. The show was already great with villains such as Buuba, Giluke, and Shiima. When Ahames arrives - everything starts to have Hell breaking loose. Giluke once had an alliance with her (and her name was mentioned early on). Both Giluke and Ahames sought to overthrow Bazoo once. Later, Ahames may have just feigned loyalty for her own ends. She trolls both the heroes AND the villains.
Before Trakeena became a fan-favorite villain in Power Rangers - I think Ahames also played that part. I even dare consider Ahames as Trakeena's closest Super Sentai counterpart over Shelinda. This bitch of a woman made the Changemen's lives miserable. Heck, Ahames even went as far as to even nearly get rid of the Earth Force, cause serious battle damage, and had her own short-lived evil trio. Ahames also used the Rigel Aura for her own selfish benefit. Ahames betrayed her closest friend Giluke just for power.
I guess all those make it hard to feel sorry for her. Maybe, we can feel sorry for the off-screen people of Amazo. However, Ahames' actions such as using Daryl and Shiima to create a deadly wave was one thing. Shiima could've died if Buuba didn't intervene. Her death was somehow very satisfying. I think it was even more satisfying than how Trakeena supposedly died in Lost Galaxy before making a guest appearance in Lightspeed Rescue under a different actress.
Great Doctor Lee Keflen
Before Dr. Hinelar was this guy. Dr. Hinelar was pretty much a hybrid character (with attributes similar to Doctor Man) - this guy pretty much is a dangerous fellow. This guy even made me wish that Lost Galaxy had Scorpius having a Dr. Hinelar type of right hand. In Flashman, I partially got my wish when Scorpius ahem Ra Deus has a mad scientist right hand. This guy practically tends to overshadow even his very cruel boss.
Keflen is the one who does all the genetic experiments. He created the generals and the monsters of the week. He would later have a rivalry with Sir Kaura. This guy was responsible for creating the upgrades of the generals as well. Keflen would slowly but surely discover Ra Deus' secret. Ra Deus was some kind of genetic mess that gained sentience. Keflen would want to take over Mess and try to take over the whole Universe FOR HIMSELF.
What makes this guy enjoyable is how hidden he is. In spite of being hidden from the rangers - he manages to steal the show. Keflen starts his sinister fall into insanity. The big secret is that he was a baby from Earth 300 years ago. Keflen goes into denial, continues to betray his master, and LOL SWEET BETRAYAL. This guy later even offers a Faustian Pact with the Flashmen. The guy's death was truly well-deserved as the Gene Synthesizer blew up taking him with it.
Sir Kaura
Flashman had a considerable set of really good villains. Maybe one can say Dr. Lee Keflen was also a show stealer. However, this guy's arrival midseason considerably shook things up. He arrived as the Bounty Hunter with the backstory regarding the Flashmen. Heck, he even held the secret of Sarah's parentage - something that was revealed only much later. This guy even went as far as to kidnap Professor Tokimura to create a gene synthesizer.
Unlike others, Kaura is pretty much Even Evil Has Standards. Kaura had his Alien Hunters team. Kaura was genuinely disgusted when he saw Keflen turn his beloved allies into monsters. Kaura also had a badass near death battle with Red Flash. A dying Kaura had his last redeeming moments. Kaura ended up doing some noble tasks towards the end of his life. I felt that this guy's development from a feared enemy to ironically providing indirect help fun to watch.
Emperor Zeba
Maskman is probably one of the darkest series ever. I guess that's why it didn't get so much appreciation (at first) though it's ironic that
Kamen Rider BLACK had received lots of love. I guess
Flashman was a tough act of follow. Now, we have Emperor Zeba (a walking spoiler) who is pretty much a very evil character.
Maskman begins with the invasion of Tube. Zeba shows he's an extremely evil fellow who desires to conquer the surface world. His generals are all cowering in fear or in blind allegiance.
How does this guy steal the show IMHO? Things get terrifying when Zeba moves or speaks. The generals such as Igam, Fumin, Baraba, and Oyobur are merely underlings. True, Igam has an interesting performance as Ial's twin sister pretending to be a man. However, it's Zeba that truly moves the show more than Igam. Heck, Zeba himself is practically negative energy personified. He also has
a dark terrifying secret that manages to produce pure nightmare fuel. Zeba always finds a way to make sure nobody knows of his dark secret.
It's also discovered Zeba's already had terrible experiments BEFORE launching the invasion. Heck, somebody became sickly because of Zeba's sick experiments. Zeba also manages to even make his followers cower in fear. Baraba was sentenced to a Do-or-Die Mission more than once. I guess it's because Baraba has been discovering Zeba's secrets. Zeba clearly wants the secrets to die with Baraba himself. Later on, we discover that Zeba is actually linked to the legendary Lethal Dobler. In fact, Zeba was born from Lethal Dobler alone asexually. Zeba ate his dying father's corpse. Eventually, the Igam twins were reunited allowing the Maskmen to fully destroy him.
Thief Knight Kiros
If it's not just Zeba - it's also Kiros! Kiros is a midseason villain who shows he doesn't fool around. One can argue he's pretty much too obsessed with Princess Ial. Heck, I even wanted to joke that in a massive crossover, he'd lust after Mio Suto of
Go-Onger the most. Now, back on topic before I discuss more about my Old Shames. I think Kiros' appearance proved he's a dangerous threat. Even Director Sugata sensed that he's a dangerous force.
What makes Kiros truly terrifying is his contigency planning. He's a threat to both the heroes and the villains. Kiros' rude intrusion into Zeba's throne room proves he's not to be messed with. Sure, Zeba's the star of the show (as a villain). Kiros ended up destroying the Shot Bomber BY HIMSELF. Kiros bringing the broken remains of the Shot Bomber was one. The Maskmen were practically defenseless without the Shot Bomber. Sugata nearly died performing an Aura boost. The Maskmen needed to build a new weapon when Kiros appeared.
What was truly weird was when a girl named Eri (almost pre-shadowing airheaded Eri of Goseiger) fell for him. Kiros proved himself to be a cruel person who can mask his true nature. Kiros was also obsessed with the secrets of Lethal Dobler. I did view him as a worthy competition against Zeba. Later, Kiros tricked Baraba so he could get Ial. Kiros' downfall was his single-minded obsession over Ial. What's still weird though is that he never attempted to flirt with Momoko (who I think is hotter). I guess it's because Ial was royalty and Momoko was a commoner.
Great Professor Bias
There's a lot of great cast members. A lot of great cast members. Still, I feel that Great Professor Bias is the one who truly rocks. It's not just because of Joji Nakata who was practically Sir Kaura in Flashman. This is where Nakata was the best antagonist - not the joke that's Bokkowaus! Great Professor Bias was the one who rocked the events. The fall of Dr. Kemp, Dr. Mazenda, and Dr. Obular was just one. Another is where Dr. Ashura was created from an illiterate thug. Sure, the great doctors were played by legendary actors such as Takumi Hirose. The evil doctors had a past with the Livemen. Yet, it was Great Professor Bias who stole the show.
Great Professor Bias has dark secrets. Okay, we don't know about his past except he's super old. He has his followers do tasks. He has pragmatic villainy. He seems kindly but he's full of evil. His plans is to make sure that the world is shaped according to his will. The fall of Kemp, Mazenda, and Obular was all arranged by him. His real aim is to get another disciple get the 1,000 points brain for him to achieve full power. The guy brilliantly laid everything.
The finale isn't the greatest battle IMHO. However, we see Great Professor Bias still possess near-unlimited malice. Heck, even his child form is still full of evil. Great Professor Bias takes advantage of his child form as to why Megumi can't shoot him. I'd give Boy King Bias a spanking but I don't think I'd shoot him. The finale even has him do some symbolisms when he died in front of a cross. Flames were over him. The whole scene was brilliantly like from a horror movie where the villain crashes into Hell.
Yamimaru and Kirika
I keep hearing how Turboranger's villains are the poor personifications of wickedness -including RAGORN himself. I think Ragorn isn't as interesting in spite of the fact that he's considered Pure Evil. Most of the Bouma's schemes are For the Evulz or trying to outdo humanity in being EEEEVVVVVVIIIIILLLL. A good example is how Rehda's release of Slime Bouma was meant to outdo the pollutions that humans do. It seems that the Bouma had no real motive except being evil. Well, it wasn't long until the Nagare Bouma were introduced.
First, we have Yamimaru who Kaiju no Kami says made the first half watchable. I think the Bouma Generals were just okay. However, Yamimaru introduces the concept of the half-human and half-demon characters. It seems to be allegory of half-Japanese people trying to fit in Japan. Yamimaru does a lot of stuff. Yamimaru uses Zimba's slain body to defeat the Turbo Robo. Yamimaru kidnaps Dr. Dazai. Yeah, Ragorn was just so stupid not to immediately receive him.
Later, we have Kirika who has Yamimaru's backstory. I still feel the flashback of Yamimaru with Kirika's foster parents to be DOES NOT COMPUTE. I wonder if Kashim has amnesia when he mentioned Kirika was the first Nagare Bouma. Still, nobody can deny Kirika's story of hurt and redemption is fun to watch. These guys got so interesting that Ragorn was temporarily written off. Ironically, Zulten was still used even if the guy is just as useless as the three Bouma generals before him.
It becomes fun to watch when Ragorn returns. Heck, even the two in their redemption are more interesting than Ragorn. Ragorn's aim to release the 108 Bouma Army was nothing more than, "I'm evil therefore I'll do that as my most evil act!" These guys had a lot of depth. Heck, they're probably the most developed characters in Turboranger.
First Captain Chevalier
Fiveman began to suffer from ratings drop for a reason. Maybe, I've ridden the bandwagon that gave Chevalier a bad assessment. However, it turns out that this guy SAVED the series. Kihachiro Uemara returns to play a villain. After rewatching Fiveman - I think he's goofy but cool. Chevalier may have had other plans as stupid as Garoa. Yet, he also was practically a force to be reckoned with. Heck, who can forget that he tried to kill Five Red in a lone duel more than once?
Chevalier was the former captain of Vulgyre. After many victories, Chevalier was allowed to retire. However, Chevalier returned hearing of Zone's struggle. Heck, Chevalier even regained the captaincy and took it away from Captain Tony Lechon ahem Garoa. Chevalier proved to be a persistent foe. Garoa would later redeem himself with disabling Super Five Robo. However, Chevalier wanted to prove himself to Galactic Empress Meadow he was the true captain.
The finale sets it straight. Meadow was later revealed to be an illusion by Vulgyre. Chevalier went in an all-out war to defeat the Fivemen. Chevalier later challenged Five Red to a chain deathmatch - my FAVORITE duel in the whole show. Five Red defeated Chevalier as Vulgyre intended. Chevalier's wicked soul was so full of blood. Vulgyre used Chevalier's death to become the Galactic Beast. Chevalier got so popular that his actor was credited even in the FINAL EPISODE'S OPENING.
Back Dimensional Count Radiguet
It's too bad that Daisuke Tachi died a few years ago. Now, for what could be considered as one of the most beloved evil forces in the franchise. Yes, Count Radiguet, my first true favorite villain after Emperor Zeba of Maskman. This guy is one incredibly sick bastard who has almost no morals whatsoever. In fact, he feels justified in his evil acts since humans are no different. I think this guy still stands out as one of the best villains to ever appear. Heck, I heard Tachi even got disgusted by his own character or that children threw stones at the actor behind the scenes. I can't verify the second claim though.
Radiguet is pretty much ambitious and won't let anybody go above him. Juuza returns for a short arc and guess what did he do? Juuza did care about Radiguet even if she's a bitch. Radiguet decides to kill Juuza so he could take over. Radiguet even kills a WEAKENED Juuza so he could claim the Semimaru. Radiguet did show he was capable of love. Radiguet, as a human, fell for a girl who looks like Hiroyo Hakase of Akibaranger named Saki. However, Radiguet later MURDERED SAKI in cold blood. His reason? Love is ridiculous. Radiguet apparently wants to become the most evil character ever and wouldn't let ANYONE get it. Not even Tran who later became Tranza.
I think Radiguet seems proud of how cruel he is. Radiguet did plan to get rid of Tranza more than once. Radiguet would offer fake help to the Jetmen so he could KILL THEM LATER. The guy had a few redeemable traits which he discards. Apparently, he just wants to be EVIL. Radiguet later set up Ryu and Tranza in hopes of defeating them both. Radiguet later left Tranza in a vegetative state for his own sick pleasure. The non-canon Manga even had Radiguet use Tranza's body.
Witch Bandora
"I've got such a headache!" was pretty much Bandora's trademark before it got carried over to Rita Repulsa. I think some Power Rangers fans consider Bandora to be Machiko's trademark character even if it was actually Queen Hedrian IMHO. I think Bandora's probably even overshadowed the Zyurangers who tend to be overshadowed by the child of the week. I feel Bandora also overshadowed even her own gang (and even her own master Dai Satan) as their headquarters is literally called Band(or)ra Palace.
Machiko's stellar performance as other evil queens is already good enough. We had Queen Hedrian and Queen Pandora. Sure, Bandora does create a lot of wacky plans to punish children. Her motives were hardly explored until later in the series. All we know is that Bandora aims like Professor K of Machineman - a villain who hates children without a good reason. Her plans go from manipuating children to throw sneezeballs to making apples out of them. They have their nightmare fuel but never fail to amuse based on how absurd they are.
Unlike Rita or Queen Hedrian - we're eventually told why she became evil. Bandora had a naughty son named Kai. All Bandora saw was the mother dinosaur chasing her son. Bandora made a pact with Dai Satan giving her powers. The finale did have Dai Satan return. Yet, Bandora ends up as the overarching antagonist even if Dai Satan is the Bigger Bad. Talk about how this witch bewitches the audience!
Lt. Col. Shadam
The final true villain of Dairanger and its most prominent antagonist. True, I didn't like Rintaro Nishi as much as Tachi. However, it seems Tachi himself was probably too disgusted with Radiguet that he didn't want to be Shadam. No doubt that Shadam is the closest thing to Radiguet after Jetman. Lord Zedd's lucky not to have this guy in his evil band! Shadam is a chronic backstabber through and through!
Shadam appears as the default antagonist. Shadam leads the Gorma Triumvirate. The appearance of Gorma XV (or what could just be another copy, take your pick) really doesn't matter. Shadam is still the big time true antagonist. Gorma XV was a puppet and too dumb. Heck, Gorma XV probably forgot that he was no longer in his original body. Shadam did forget he wasn't in his original body either. Still, we know Shadam created the clay copies. I believe Shadam created a clay body of himself to cheat death. The show seems to let the viewers decide.
Shadam's villainy even goes up to the finale. Shadam becomes the shortest-reigned Gorma emperor as Gorma XVI. The final battle ends up with Ryou dueling Shadam. I don't find a bit of pity to Shadam finally crumbling. Okay, I think the mud dolls was probably just some copout. Maybe, Shadam was supposed to spit blood like Radiguet did. Instead, I guess his death was altered due to how the show had too much blood resulting in complaints.
Prince Junior
Sadly, he was that short-lived with just an arc dedicated to him. I felt that Prince Junior did more than his father Daimaou. I wonder why did Kenichi Endo leave so soon? Endo did have guest roles such as in Exceedraft and Janperson. I guess Endo had other projects. Now, let's give some real appreciation of a villain I believe was truly more revolting than Rito Revolto himself.
Prince Junior is both comedic and sadistic. It's a bizarre combination. I think he was the greatest threat the Kakurangers ever faced. It was fun to see him use various weapons like a chainsaw. He was also the Big Ham villain. The song "Kuro No Kikoushi" was a cool devilish song. However, he was soon easily disposed off by Kakure Daishogun. Sigh, I just felt that Daimaou wasn't as cool as his vicious son. This one did predict the fall of Warz Gil in Gokaiger who died ahead of his father.
Dr. Hinelar
I think he's a fusion between Dr. Man and Great Doctor Lee Keflen. Like Dr. Man, he used to be a man and had a former friend he's at odds with. The war between Dr. Kubota and Dr. Hinelar is a full-season version of Dr. Man's war with his former friend Dr. Gou. Dr. Hinelar figured a way to Nezire and devoted himself to its ruler Javious I. However, this guy had other ambitions which he even overthrew his master.
I found Gurail to be a cool villain. I still think Gurail should've stayed a bit. Instead, the ultimate trolls, the Nezirangers came in. The Nezirangers are the creations of Dr. Hinelar as well. Dr. Hinelar ends up becoming more active than his master Javious I. Javious I was just barking orders and the Megarangers probably never knew he existed. Instead, Dr. Hinelar craftily calculated the fall of Javious I so he coudl rule all of reality. Javious I was just as lame as the Dark Specter anyway. No loss that Javious I died in the background since that's what the really was.
Unlike previous villains, Dr. Hinelar never knew the identity of the Megarangers. The Megarangers managed to keep their identity even more secret as the villains never knew their human identities. When Dr. Hinelar figured out who they are - he slowly ruins the lives of the Megarangers. In the finale, Dr. Hinelar goes as far as to take the battle PERSONALLY. Dr. Hinelar even dared to try and attack a school as well. Like Dr. Man, Dr. Hinelar launches his most powerful creation for a final battle before meeting his demise.
Grand Bitch Grandienne
Okay, she's the Grand Witch but isn't she the Grand Bitch too? GoGoFive had an interesting cast of characters. I even dare say GoGoFive managed to correct what Fiveman did wrong. The battle is between the two clans - the Tatsumi family and the Saima family. The Saima clan is everything that the Tatsumis aren't. Now, we have the Saima siblings awaiting the arrival of their cruel uncaring mother, Grandienne. Grandienne is truly as wicked as she could get.
Grandienne hardly spoke but she soon slowly arrived. There was the ark of her descent. Grandienne was about to descend in a physical body but failed. I felt her dreadful presence was meant to be an anti-thesis of what Meadow was in Fiveman. Vulgyre used the angelic-looking face of Meadow to draw followers. Grandienne's okubi projection (at first) is the picture of blatant evil. Grandienne later came down incomplete when the Grand Cross ritual was interrupted. However, Grandienne nonetheless still caused harm. Grandienne also pit her own two sons against each other. Grandienne turned Drop into Salamandes with hopes of punishing Denus and Kobolda for their failures. Ouch, that's a very cruel mother. Later, Grandienne banished Salamandes for failure.
Later, Grandienne revealed to what she truly was. Grandienne is collective negative energy. GoGoFive destroyed her body only to unleash a greater plague. Grandienne's final form still reminds me of the Meadow projection Vulgyre created. Grandienne turned Zylpheeza and Salamandes into mindless puppets. It was only when Victory Robo Sigma (which I think also uses life force energy) arrived and did a last-minute risky attack she was expelled from Earth. Grandienne's ghost was banished into Hell after that.
Mikoto Nakadai
Ah Abaranger which is a show I put as the best of the dinosaur shows AND I beat up Dino Thunder without mercy because of it. This is one sick villain I felt stole the show. Sure, Abaranger has a lot of cool characters. However, I think Mikoto himself practically became the star of the show when he arrived. He's evil and a thrill seeker. I felt that the Evorian were practically not as interesting as he was. He's my favorite villain in the show.
How do I think Mikoto's cool? Back then the Evorian God was still not fully evolved. Mikoto managed to temporarily take over the Evorian. Mikoto seeks excitement for his boredom. Heck, I wonder why did Mikoto even want to collide Earth with Jupiter?! Regardless, the threat of Mikoto couldn't be discounted. It can't be even helped that Mikoto doesn't care if his suit will eventually explode. All this guy cares is to have fun to appease his sadism.
Later on, the show started to give him his last minute redemption. I wonder if it was bad writing or not. Still, I think that his extreme sadism was explained because part of the Evorian God was with him. Ironically, Mikoto has been more interesting even than the main antagonist. Was Mikoto a villain meant to boost up ratings? I guess the redemption arc was a response to his popularity. Still, I think the guy had so many irredeemable moments it's hard to accept his redemption or that Yama would send him to Heaven.
Agent Abrella
Maybe, one of the most malevolent characters ever created. Dekaranger is considerably lighter and softer than the Rescue Police Trilogy or Janperson. Maybe, even lighter than Blue SWAT which it probably took inspiration from. I did watch Solbrain and saw its villain Takaoka be the ultimate troll. Here, Abrella seems to be a vile villain in a saccharine show. The guy really has no qualms as long as he gets money. Oh boy, I guess Emperor Grumm was lucky to have Broodwing and not him as the dealer in SPD.
Abrella has been the central force of the show. True, Dekaranger has no central organization. Like Takaoka of Solbrain - he's an overarching antagonist. The moment Takaoka appeared - the Solbrain team was practically cornered. That's what Abrella does - the Dekarangers are frequently cornered when he's the focus. Abrella has been selling weapons to the Universe' most dangerous criminals. The only thing saving the Dekarangers is the fact that Super Sentai toned down since Gaoranger. Otherwise, this guy would've done worse.
I think Abrella still exists as one of the worst villains. Dekaranger for all its lighter moments has a villain that would be too dangerous. I believe Abrella's cruel actions are something to think about. Heck, I think anybody would be too horrified to face him.
Long the Immoral Dragon
Long has to be one of the most wicked villains after. We've mentioned a lot before. Gekiranger seems to be a show trying to return to more serious roots. We have the conflict of the two schools of martial arts. Earlier on, we have Rio and Mele as the antagonists. However, the two start to fade away half of the show because one guy steals the show from everyone in just 27 episodes. Yes, we're talking about Long who arrives later on and is the true mastermind behind all the miseries in the show.
I think Long's involvement in Jan's past is that disturbing. I did compare it to Wild Force back then and Gekiranger aired on Wild Force's fifth anniversary. Gekiranger was also a celebration of Maskman's 20th anniversary too. I guess the dark energy couldn't be avoided. Long was practically petty. Maybe, Viktor Adler as the Second Master Org had more of an excuse to go Pure Evil. Not Long. Long killed Jan Kandou's mother in cold blood. Long also turned Dan into his personal minion. We know how this guy truly is as cold-blooded villain.
The revelation arc truly focuses on him. Rio and Mele are all but manipulated by him. Heck, Long even chews out Rio and Mele to prove he's one magnificent bastard. The Gekirangers had to turn him into a ball because he's practically immortal. His popularity gave him more non-canon appearances. First was in the Go-onger vs. Gekiranger crossover. We also see him return in Super Hero Taisen where he only appeared as a suit character and was sadly wasted.
Basco
Yet another fan favorite huh? Kei Hosogai does a good job bringing this vile piece of scum to life. I felt Gokaiger can be overhyped or that people tend to think they know everything by watching it. Meanwhile, I felt the Zangyack weren't that great. Warz Gill is such a whiner it can get annoying to watch. The one thing that saved Gokaiger was the likable main hero cast and the cameos. Just then, we have a villain that starts to really become a huge show stealer. He's really a dangerous threat to both the Gokaigers AND the Zangyacks.
What makes this guy truly threatening is his former associations. Basco used to be allies with Captain Marvelous and Aka Red. Later, he returns seeking the Greatest Treasure in the Universe by STEALING the Ranger Keys. Basco has a trumpet that could allow him to summon evil ranger doppelgangers. I guess this guy was probably another why rumors came out that Gai Ikari will die. Fortunately, Gai Ikari lives unlike Gai Yuki who left us so soon. Every time Basco appears - there's always a good reason to be terrified. Heck, Basco even killed his pet gorilla Sally OUT OF SPITE.
Canonically, Basco was defeated by Captain Marvelous for good. However, he's just too popular, right? Basco made a non-canon appearance in both Gokaiger vs. Gavan and Go-Busters vs. Gokaiger. Later, this bastard appeared in Kyuranger vs. Space Squad. I guess his popularity has caused him to keep making more non-canon appearances. Heck, he even had a non-canon appearance in the Zenkaiger Red Rally movie. I simply appreciated every effort Hosogai made to resume his role even if it wasn't canon.
Enter
I initially had negative opinions on Enter UNTIL I decided to rewatch
Go-Busters.
Yup, I decided to rewatch Go-Busters after I wondered why I even watched Beast Morphers. I did watch
Beast Morphers because I was finding Zoey Reeves to be very pretty. Well,
Megaforce had pretty girls but we know how much of a disaster it is. After some rewatch - I felt that Enter himself is another fan-favorite villain. Heck, I even think that's the reason why the Messiah Virus was eventually aborted on Christmas Eve.
Enter happens to be an attention whore. Yes, but he deserves attention due to how vile he can be. The Messiah Virus is pretty much Venjix 2.0 in some ways. The Messiah Virus would bark orders. I think it's only fortunate that the Venjix Virus doesn't have Enter as a henchman. Enter is just so cruel one way or another. It's always trouble every time he appears. Escape did become another thorn. Yet, it was Enter who practically was the survivor. In fact, Enter had creative treachery in regards to the Messiah Virus' cards split into 13. Heck, the 13th card ended up into Hiromu!
I think Enter's character is pretty much another attempt at a darker season after an anniversary. We had it with Hurricanger and Gekiranger. Enter's character is more vile than any of the villains in Power Rangers based on him. Heckyl in Dino Charge was pretty much a standard redeemable villain. Cyber Blaze is just a generic henchman. Enter proves himself so dangerous compared to them. I guess this guy will always exist as one of the best villains ever.
Emperor Zetto
I guess it's very often that Z is read as "zed" or "zetto". Some people tend to think Z is read as zed. I guess I want to throw the "That's Zedd! LORD ZEDD!" joke in here. I did have initial issues with ToQGer. Right now, I'm not afraid to admit that while I'm warming up to it - it's not as great as some people want to make it look as. Heck, I'm not going to be afraid to admit that the crossover with Kamen Rider Gaim drove me to sleep. Fortunately, Kamen Rider Drive's crossover with Ninninger totally was a big improvement IMHO. Now, we have this unorthodox villain that probably won fans over.
Emperor Zetto isn't exactly what you expect. The Shadow Line wants to conquer the world AND drown it in darkness. This guy is utterly misplaced. One joke I made is that he's a son of Lord Zedd and Rita born sometime after Space ended. My joke was that Zordon's wave purified him (sort of). He's so obsessed with everything that shines he's an anti-thesis. I guess Yasuko Kobayashi wanted to try something by breaking expectations. His plans have been to feed his obsessions and do idiotic cruel stuff along the way.
I think he's probably getting good reception for being different. I think the actor Kengo Ohkuchi nailed it. The finale though wasn't so good. I felt it's almost as random as Orphnoch King. Heck, like the Orphnoch King, Emperor Zetto just landed in a CONVENIENT COMA. Yeah, but I think this guy is probably still a show stealer. The good performance really steals the spotlight. He'd want all of it even if it's not really beneficial to him.
Don Armage
I did get critical with
Super Sentai since
Kyoryuger. Until now, I still freaking hate
Kyoryuger like I hate
Boys Over Flowers. Fortunately, 2017 gave us a good series. Heck,
Kyuranger made me even think
that Space is a very overrated Power Rangers series as well. If anybody in this show stole the show - it's Don Armage. I feel this guy has been more threatening than the Dark Specter, better than the random return of Emperor Palpatine in
The Rise of Skywalker (which I view was j
ust an act of desperation). If anybody else deserved the title of the Grand Monarch of Evil aside from Star King Bazoo in
Changeman - it's also Don Armage. Don Armage practically is a dark specter of sorts as well.
How does Don Armage dominate
Kyuranger? It's because he already won before the show began. Heck, in 2017, he even caused much of a ruckus and even chose to dominate the already corrupt Cuervo for his own selfish ends. Later, Don Armage rules the Universe with an iron fist. The Kyurangers are already living in fear and terror of his regime. Even worse, Don Armage has been either cheating death several times or has been using Doombots along the way. Lucky was pretty much surprised (but not the audience) that Don Armage still ruled the future after they supposedly defeated him.
It was a good thing Don Armage showed us how terrifying he can be. Unlike President Skroob of Spaceballs - his reason for collecting Planesium is for a grand Countdown to Destruction. Don Armage even turned Aslan into Darth Vader Lite. Sure, the scene between Lucky and Aslan isn't as touching as Return of the Jedi. Still, we can see how Don Armage has no qualms about destroying the Universe so he can reshape it into his image. It kinda reminds me of when Saban's X-Men: The Animated Series had Apocalypse seek to reshape all reality. Heck, I think Darkonda would've perished if he attempted to defeat Don Armage. Don Armage would've probably blown Darkonda and fire the nuclear missile towards any threat.
Yodonna
I think
Kiramager was an improvement over what
ToQGer started.
ToQGer did win an award - something I doubt happened with
Kiramager. Anyway, it's going to be worth talking about a villain who even went as far as to have
her own spin-off. We have Yodonna in
Kyuranger who's acted by Nashiko Momotsuki of
GARO fame.
GARO is a pretty much adult franchise. Here, Momotsuki is in a child's show and had an age-restricted spin-off that didn't have what my perverted side expected.
I think Momotsuki's excellent acting stole the show. True, I wanted
Sayaka Akimoto to play the role. Other candidates included Nao Nagasawa (who played as Shuka in a non-canon
Kamen Rider movie), Ayumi Kinoshita, and maybe even Rin Takanashi. I think Momotsuki was hired after several choices weren't available. Yodonna's appearance is a very terrifying one. The initial invasion force was full of idiots. That's why Emperor Yodon sent his "daughter" Yodonna (actually born from his mind) to do the job.
I guess so many praise for Yodonna was written. Granted, the main cast of Super Sentai are mostly newbies. More experienced celebrities play the villains. Yodonna is no exception with Momotsuki. I guess Momotsuki's terrifyingly brilliant portrayal was something. I even find her performance in Kiramager vs. Ryusoulger to be the best part. I even laughed when Canalo tried to hit on the character. Now, only if we can see more Yodonna performances even if they'll be mostly non-canon.
________
Which villains did you think were so good they stole the show? I really want to share these villains to having had done just that!
Did you hear that Kamen Rider BLACK got announced by Discotek ?
ReplyDeleteYes I heard of it. They also released Kuuga as well. I wonder if Discotek will end up releasing more Toku DVDs in the future than Shout ever will?
DeleteRight now, there is a war between Shout! and Discotek. TOKU HD is now out of the question (in the US, cause they are still active in Latin America).
