King-Ohger's VS Films: A Short Film With Donbrothers, A Time-Travel Mess With Kyoryuger
I dare say I'm still overly hyped with Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger that I'm slowing down on Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger. I finally saw the two movies Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger vs. Doubutsu Sentai Donbrothers (which obviously fits into the non-canon VS. Series unless Toei says otherwise) and what's intended to patch things up with the whole Kyoryuger is part of King-Ohger possible retcon. Some people are probably still forcing the narrative that a Super Sentai timeline supposedly exists.
King-Ohger vs. Donbrothers has me mixed since I do love both shows
Maybe, I was too used to the idea most crossover specials need to be at least 45 minutes to an hour long. The previous one before this namely Avatar Sentai Donbrothers vs. Kikou Sentai Zenkaiger was an hour long. It finally showed the crossover belongs to two different Universes. It's unlike how most Super Sentai crossovers just play out with being intentionally non-canon. For example, Ninpou Sentai Hurricanger crossover films really had Oboro Hinata directly tell us it's just a special.
This special gets wonky. I was expecting too much because I enjoyed both shows. However, Toei probably cut this special short because it allocated a bigger budget with...
The time-traveling hijinks of King-Ohger vs. Kyoryuger
This film is at least 42 minutes long - a few minutes shorter than the 45-minute to 48-minute timeframe. The film was rich in action scenes from the cast of both sides. Also, it's nice to see Marie Iitoyo (congratulations on her marriage), Atsushi Maruyama, and Ryo Ryusei (who finally found time to do so) return as a complete team. The movie takes place sometime after King-Ohger ended.
Time travel hijinks run the whole short film. Yes, this movie can be messy because of the time-travel plot. Utsusemimaru manages to screw things up with his hysterics. I felt sorry for Yayoi having to deal with botched time travel calculations thanks to Utsusemimaru's hysterical attitude. Prince is also in danger of disappearing. A clip of the Kyoryuger 100 Years After was added to the time travel hijinks. Interestingly, the love triangle between Amy and Yayoi for Daigo was brought up. A lot of events really change history for the worse.
One part of this follow-up movie that amused me is Yayoi's line. Some fans find the whole Daigo x Amy pairing as overly random. I'd accept the pairing IF it was well-written. I can understand if I botch up story writing since I'm not professionally trained. Daigo x Amy reminds me of other pairings that are all too awful. It was so suddenly slapped at full velocity on the faces of fans. I did laugh because Marie Iitoyo recently got married to Issei Takahashi (who's 17 years her senior). I could've treated Marie's marriage as, "Oh, okay, congratulations!" reaction since I was never a fan of hers. However, her character Yayoi saying that line made me laugh. Daigo x Amy is as random as the Tommy/Kat shipping in Power Rangers Zeo and the first half of Power Rangers Turbo.
An alternate timeline emerges where the Ohsama Sentai became losers. I was laughing at the worst turn that the monarchs had. Even worse, Gira became a real Tyrant King because of some time travel mishap. This almost reminds me of the dysfunctional future that was in Kamen Rider Zi-O. The Jesters return to cause trouble but are reduced to mere fanservice in this OVA sequel.
However, this movie is still better than the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger Returns OVA. It tried its best to link to the finale. Racules' absence might be explained by Masato Yano having to deal with his real-life issues. Masato did make a cameo in the crossover with Donbrothers.

I guess Toei probably bit more than they could chew. That may explain why Boonboomger is using simpler designs. The ideas were good. My problem is how the first movie turned out since I'm too used to having at least 45 minutes to one hour. Meanwhile, the second film is longer than a regular TV episode.
Reviews on IMDB (which Shogo B'Stard calls Inaccurate Movie Database) are low. I guess fans expected too much and Toei tried to overmilk King-Ohger after the hype it created. It's safe to assume fan bandwagons can be EXTREMELY VICIOUS with backlash huh?
