My Final Thoughts On Zenkaiger And Early Thoughts For Its Direct Sequel Donbrothers

Image
Zenkaiger is yet another attempt at Super Sentai to rewrite the formula in more than one way. One can think of how JAKQ started with four members and ended up with five later in the series. Battle Fever J was the first series to use "Super Sentai" and have a giant robot.  Sun Vulcan only had three members and replaced its red ranger midseason. Ohranger eventually added Goranger and JAKQ into the Super Sentai series retroactively. Though, most Super Sentai seasons tend to operate independently from each other except for a few like how Denziman is a direct sequel of Sun Vulcan . Meanwhile, some Toku series by Toei Ltd. had some direct connections to each other like the Showa era Kamen Rider series (though Kamen Rider Black was meant to be a reboot until its failed sequel Black RX ) and how the Space Sheriff Trilogy connected to each other directly, how Solbrain and Exceedraft had Winspector as its starting point, and how B-Fighter Kabuto is a direct sequel (though takes years...

My Thoughts On Kaiju No Kami's Super Sentai Reviews

Image
I must admit that I've met various CLASHING opinions regarding Super Sentai. I've had some series that I enjoyed while others didn't. I feel Shogo B'Stard can be too negative with the newer Super Sentai. I think Sentai Bandicoot's opinions on Gougou Sentai Boukenger don't match up with mine. Sure, I don't think that Boukenger is that great anymore. However, I feel the series is still worth the watch for all its crazy antics. Right now, I even agree with some people that  Engine Sentai Go-Onger is a mess after I watched Carranger . Carranger may have not normalized ratings but it did gain some following that a rumor it saved Super Sentai happened. I didn't want to write about Kaiju No Kami's Super Sentai reviews until he did his Turboranger review where the thumbnail REALLY showed he absolutely disliked the show. I'm a guy who thinks Turboranger is decent while Kaiju No Kami says otherwise. Kaiju No Kami gave a good score to Carranger and a low sc...

Some Pink Rangers That May Have Defied MY Expectations

Image
Somehow, it's very typical that the pink ranger is the show's "The Chick", right? The recent Donbrothers has a MALE pink ranger Tyuyoshi Kijino who's living the dreams of his wife Miho. Quite unexpected? Well, I decided to think about a number of times when pink rangers just felt "odd" or not your typical pink rangers. So, here they are... Mai Tsubasa Pink rangers are usually expected to be feminine but that somewhat got defied during Dengeki Sentai Changeman . True, Mai Tsubasa had a crush on a scientist (who was NEVER mentioned again like one-shot love interests in many superhero shows) but she was rather tougher than usual. Sayaka Nagisa was pretty much the one who showed herself as a more action-based pink ranger. Something that somehow made itself more known throughout the franchise. Though, later more action-based pinks still preferred to win the battle with wits over guts.  Yuuri Yuuri in Mirai Sentai Timeranger is probably someone not so welcome ...

Rambling About My Long History With Super Sentai And Power Rangers

Image
It can't be denied that I pretended to like Power Rangers , I pretty much wrote a bad fanfic which I deleted because I have no intention of continuing it (plus it's an Old Shame), and I've been thinking that if I don't like Power Rangers then I've got the right not to watch it. It's pretty much what Ukiyaseed mentions that you can dislike Power Rangers all you want - just remember it's still a LEGITIMATE production with contracts by Toei Ltd. Though its reliance on the licensed use of Super Sentai fight footage is just awkward. I felt that Haim Saban was probably looking for a quick buck even if he was involved in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show and the highly successful X-Men: The Animated Series . So, I always want to say that Saban and Toei Ltd. both created a quick money maker that's the Power Rangers franchise. As I feel my Toku vibes are dangerously low - I think I feel like writing this nostalgic blog post. I felt Kikou Sentai Zenkaiger failed ...

I Felt It Was Difficult To Watch Super Sentai After Go-Busters

Image
It doesn't matter how many times I can admit I don't like Power Rangers - I'll never say Super Sentai is perfect. There are also Super Sentai seasons that I feel aren't as good. I decided to give Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters a shot and I personally find it to be a decent attempt. It's almost like after I decided to re-evaluate Kamen Rider Faiz -  there's potential but there's also a loss of charge. I felt Yasuko Kobayashi started losing her charge in Go-Busters (even if I use this series to derail Power Rangers RPM and not too much on Power Rangers Beast Morphers ) and Toshiki Inoue lost some charge in Faiz . Well, both of them ended up in their weaker moments when Ressha Sentai ToQGer and Kamen Rider Kiva came to mind. I've learned to enjoy ToQGer for what it is just like I did with Kiva. Though, I felt like writing his post 10 years after Go-Busters came into the airwaves.  Go-Busters felt like going back to simpler times while having the digital age. N...

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger: Not Much A Masterpiece IMHO But An Important Step In Super Sentai's Innovation

Image
The Super Sentai franchise underwent some turbulent times. Before Super Sentai - it was just "Sentai" with Himitsu Sentai Goranger and Dengekitai JAKQ . One series was so good it reached 84 episodes of overextension. The other was so bad it got rushed to only 35 episodes. I felt that JAKQ really can help me justify why I didn't like the Disney rushed Power Rangers seasons. Super Sentai nearly faced cancellation after the hiatus that happened after JAKQ which Battle Fever J became the standard bearer of a yearly Super Sentai. It was in the late 1980s when Kosoku Sentai Turboranger started to have its ratings decline (hence why the Nagare Bouma got introduced in hopes of fixing it) and the controversial Chikyu Sentai Fiveman meltdown. Fiveman was SO BAD for its time that it nearly killed the franchise. Winspector was doing good at that year though. Though, I still feel both series served as important lessons for making better series such as Gekisou Sentai Carranger (thoug...

Celebrating Kyuranger's Fifth Anniversary By Rambling About Western Sci-Fi Influence In Toei's Tokusatsu

Image
It's obvious that I'm losing my Toku spark one way or another. I think I might want to exit it but at least leave a bit of a mark with some good memories of the franchise. I find myself not paying much attention to Zenkaiger when watching it. However, a new article from Henshin Grid discussed about the sci-fi influence with Power Rangers . Yeah, you know by now I dislike the franchise even when I acknowledge that Toei Ltd. is also part of it. This will be a pretty exhaustive post which I want to write because it's been five years since Kyuranger aired. With that, I decided to celebrate its fifth anniversary today with this post! The popularity of certain American franchises A bit of research may help you find out some of the popular movies and series that may have influenced Toei Ltd. 1977 was the birth of the Star Wars movies which The New Hope was the first film. The success spawned the rise of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - all before Disney's ...
