Dynaman As A Truly Explosive Improvement For Super Sentai In The 1980s (Spoilers)

Image
Hirohisa Soda is often hailed as Hail to the King or the best innovator ever. I've already seen all of the Soda era series to finally judge things . I really had no idea that the head writer of Dai Sentai Goggle V up to Chikyu Sentai Fiveman was all but one person until many years later. Yeah, that's how clueless I was until the Internet. I watched all the series in a rather jumbled order and that's okay. Super Sentai doesn't operate with too many throwbacks. Some people could start with something bad and then end up doing better. In the case of Soda, I think Goggle V was pretty much So Okay It's Average. Goggle V for me was fun but it can be overly cheesy, there are times the rangers feel too OP (especially with group gymnastic techniques), and the Deathdark villains aren't terrible but not amazing either. Before that, the 1980s started to kick off with other So Okay It's Average shows. I watched both Denzi Sentai Denziman and Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan . Mayb...

Can Spirit Transfer Explain The Open-Ended Ending Of Dairanger? (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Image
Some time ago, I decided to watch Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Once and Always and I used Robo Rita's situation to explain that Gara of the Gorma could've been . There will be spoilers if you haven't watched Gosei Sentai Dairanger so be very careful. If not, read ahead, or if you don't mind being spoiled. I tend to be a spoiler addict myself. As the Chinese Ghost Month ends today and with all the Chinese influences in Dairanger - it would be a good nostalgic post to write this on. What I probably never wanted to mention was some subtle horror movie references in Dairanger . Killers in hockey masks may remind some of Jason Voorhees. Though, what I've ignored for years was this... Episode 3 featured what would never be approved by Fox Kids. There was a movie called Child's Play that was released in 1988 - the same year as Chojuu Sentai Liveman . There's a certain level where I could tolerate blood and violence. The Key Jester would steal the souls of peo...

King-Ohger 28: A Messy Switcheroo X3

Image
This week's episode has got to be a very messy comedy. Maybe, I'll call it a watchable mess of an episode. If I could actually bother to finish some shows like Kamen Rider BLACK RX , B-Fighter Kabuto , Kamen Rider Kabuto , and Kamen Rider Kiva then I don't find this episode a real challenge. Yes, it's kind of a mess but it's pretty watchable and entertaining. This episode manages to take the body swapping episodes of Chikyu Sentai Fiveman (where Fumiya and Remi got body-swapped), Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (where Billy and Kimberly got their bodies swapped by a failed experiment), and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (where Doc and Luka got body-swapped). In this case, prepare for three times the mayhem! Dugdead Dujardin prepares for another game. He goes to his generals and punishes Kamejim for his previous failure. Now, it's time for the next one who I think is Gorma, not Goma. Okay, I could be wrong though. The new plan is to create a big mess to deal with the ...

King-Ohger 27: The Self-Proclaimed King Of The Universe Arrives

Image
It's been two years since the Bugnarok vs. Human conflict ended. What happens next is the arrival of the dreaded Galactainsect King, DugDEAD Dujardin. The surname Dujardin means "from the garden". For some science trivia - maybe some will remember Felix Dujardin the French biologist and cytologist. I think DugDEAD (I'll refer to him as such for punny reasons) is given the Dujardin surname to make him an irony. Dujardin discovered how complex the human cell can be.  The beginning reveals that the Bugnarok Kingdom has been subdued. What truly gets menacing is how Kamejin survived an ULTRAZORD battle of all things. We did have an incident when Dai Satan escaped when Kyukyoku Daizyujin was formed in Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger . Col. Major Zydos of the Gorma also survived being crushed by the Heavenly Armor Chi Palace in Gosei Sentai Dairanger . It's sad to see Jeramie who just begun the peace treaty - get crushed.  Something must have happened to get the other monarchs t...

Special Episode Review: Bioman Episode 10 "Goodbye Yellow"

Image
Back then, Chodenshi Bioman was my first exposure to the Super Sentai franchise. I want to do a review of the episode that may have brought tears to the eyes of the viewers. It was the death of Mika Koizumi. She was known as Cassie in the Filipino-English dub. The reason behind the episode was Yuki Yajima's sudden departure. Some say that she was pregnant (questionable), she had contractual disputes (most likely), or that she just quit realizing show business wasn't for her.  The episode begins with New Empire Gear plotting its latest revenge. A previous episode had Doctor Man slowly planning to get the biometrics of the Biomen. Blue Three served as a sample. That also included regeneration data. However, Doctor Man slowly discovered some of the Universe's biggest secrets. The Kryptonite to the Bio Particles was none other than the Anti-Bio Particles! Doctor Man devices some form of gangster-type gun called the Bio Killer Gun. Doctor Man entrusts the weapon to Mason after...
