Stuff I Like About Gobusters

Image
Well I finally decided to rewatch Gobusters and see if my opinion has changed since I missed a good half of the show while watching the finale arc.  I've seen up to the episode where Jin Masato arrived but let's just say, I was pretty much getting my personal biases on the way.  But here are some positive thoughts from me about the series and why I may resume with it when I'm not busy after having so much of unfair biases: The heroes.  Well I was thinking about the characterization itself.  I know it's not as good as Shinkenger and Hiromu's fear of chickens is really stupid, I thought that having their limits to their powers was a good plot. Having the old school feel at a certain level.  I do like multiple mecha but sometimes, it bores me and I'd like to switch back to some old school stuff. Gobusters unlike Shinkenger had less mecha like its predecessors Gingaman and Timeranger.  Also, it had the three plus two formula which again was pretty old sch...

Having Changes in Super Sentai: Why It Really Matters A Lot

Image
Well you guess by now I'm the kind of person who can't immediately accept certain changes and sometimes I do.  But let's just face it, changes must happen and the immutable law is the law of change as Greek philosopher Heraclitus says.  So why are changes in Super Sentai important? Times change maybe as fast as one decade or less than a decade .  Like it or not, the 80s, the 90s and 2000s and last decade, everything changes.  We have to accept that time eras differ per era which can dictate the way the show goes like its stories, themes, execution and aesthetics are among a few.  Like it or not, current events can affect how a show goes.  Ohranger was airing during the time of the sarin gas station incident in Japan.  I don't know much about it but I've heard that the show ended up shifting between the initially wanted darker and edgier to lighter and softer because of the terrible times that were happening.  In the case of Power Rangers, Time ...

A Crash Course on Changes in Super Sentai Per Era

Image
After I've ranted what I currently dislike about newer Super Sentai and after showing why I still like the 80s-90s Sentai the best, however times change and change is a need.  As Heraclitus says, "Change is the only thing that does not change."  Now here's what we have observed with change per era or decade: Late 70s-80s era: This era was pretty much an experimental era but also had its loads of goodness from Hirohisa Soda who did from Goggle V up to Turboranger, Soda entered the 90s with his last work Fiveman.  This was also the era of introducing certain colors like white (in JAKQ's Big One), the first female white ranger (Changeman), the first black ranger (Battle Fever J's Battle Kenya), the almost ignored orange ranger (Battle Cossack suit in Battle Fever J) while I'd love to focus on the mecha: Introduction of the Super Sentai robot with Battle Fever J.  The Super Robot franchise was pretty popular back then so why not add robots to Super Sent...

The Brighter Side of My Personal Issues with Super Sentai

Image
I have written about the issues I have with Super Sentai as of late, still liking the 80s-90s era better than the 2000s.  After that, I felt like Tokusatsu in general had gotten too kiddie but hey, I just thought here's the brighter side of my personal issues with Super Sentai because what I may dislike may actually be good for the franchise in itself because the primary market are children: The amount of mecha with the tendency for an overload.  For an older fan, it might get boring except if they are really that strong in their fandom for Super Sentai but kids love mecha.  I would say maybe some say, "Well that's too much mecha, that's boring." but at the child's viewpoint, they'll say, "Wow that's cool, that's a lot of mecha."  This one in turn keeps Super Sentai running and might be one good reason why it still manages to extend itself.  At this point, I would probably say most of Toei's producers aren't that good for me b...

Some Issues I'm Having with Super Sentai as of Late

Image
Well I can't deny it but it seems my vibe for Super Sentai or Tokusatsu as a whole is probably not as great anymore because as I've said, I have bigger vibes like Chinese movies, Japanese movies, C-Drama and J-Drama are stuff I love better than Super Sentai or Tokusatsu in general.  As said, I've instead focused on my celebrities blog and what went beyond the Tokusatsu.  Here's my issues with Super Sentai as of late: Having loads of mecha for the sake of toy sales and most of the time, it becomes just a toy commercial.  In Boukenger, I enjoyed some of the mecha but the others are boring.  Go-onger I don't hate it but it does suffer from too much mecha.  Shinkenger is a nice season but heck, Mougyudaioh and Daigoyou were really taking some space that could have been used for character development and then so did Goseiger a season I tend to dislike which in turn didn't immediately get me excited for Megaforce.  I could understand Gokaiger doing this bec...

Ranting on Akibaranger Season One and Tsuu

Image
I did quite an incomplete rant on Akibaranger not so long ago or so logn ago, well here's what I was thinking about the series in a nutshell... Season One Season one was basically the battle that seemed to take only in their heads until they realize that their fantasies weren't just fantasies.  That was, everything about this season starts with Nobuo Akagi who is a delusional delivery man who is 29 years old but is too open about his obsession with Super Sentai and two, why in the world is he too in love with a fictional character Aoi?  Well, he is in love with Sayaka and I wanted them to be together.  For Mitsuki she's probably the only one who thinks from the trio and for Yumeria, she happens to be pretty silly but fortunately not overly silly. At first made me think was the battle only in their heads?  So I guess I can relate to them since I delude myself to be a henshin hero whenever I am alone. Not that I actually an open about it or two, I accept that rea...

Why I Still Think the 80s-90s Super Sentai Are The Best Eras for the Genre

Image
I would admit I enjoy the works of Naruhisa Arakawa and I like modern Super Sentai but lately, after Gokaiger, it seems Super Sentai is entering into the dork age especially when writers like Toshiki Inoue and Yasuko Kobayashi have burned out beyond belief.  Even Riku Sanjou's performance in Kyoryuger is pretty questionable.  Now for why I think the 80s-90s Super Sentai are the best: It was the era where Hirohisa Soda had much influence.  He was the head writer of the shows mentioned in this picture made by Shougo B'Stard.  I would really say that he's still a legend even if he's now past his prime.  I love Arakawa's work but I still love Soda the best.  I mean, Hirohisa Soda revolutionized Super Sentai writing as well. Sentai mecha days weren't too focused on toy sales plus if a new mecha came in, there was a really good plot written behind it most of the time. Most Super Sentai these days usually include newer mecha just for the sake of selling toys...
